After upgrading to XP the avast symbol does not apper in the task bar. I have checked to see if it is hidden as suggested in FAQ, but it is just not there.
Any suggestions please?

As has been told in several threads here, you must reinstall Avast when you upgraded from 98(se) to XP
Sorry, you have to uninstall avast! and install it again on the new system. It’s not possible just to upgrade the underlying operating system - avast! uses (partly) different files for each OS.
