I’m still running avast under xp pro. Do I have to reinstall if I upgrade to win 7? Thanks, Esmo
Since W7 is entirely different from XP, you should perform a clean install of everything.
Eddy is correct. It is not possible to upgrade from XP to Win 7.
Upgrade path would look like this:
- XP to Vista
- Vista to Win 7
- Win 7 to Win 8
Can’t upgrade from XP to Win 7 or Win 8, but must install Vista first, then Win 7 to upgrade to Win 8.
So, yes you’ll need to back up all personal files first onto two different backup mediums, and then reinstall your avast! onto the fresh clean install of Win 7.
And you’ll need to find all necessary drivers for your hardware for Win 7 and your system to run as it should, first, before you begin.
Also, if your new system (it wasn’t clear whether you’re putting Win 7 on the system that had XP, or onto a new computer) is 64-bit, you can kiss any 16-bit apps (or installers) goodbye, the new system can’t handle them.
What are your system specifications?
For example, anything less than a true dual-core processor and true minimum of 4 GB RAM will result in a system running Win 7 you may not be happy with. Intel dual-core consumer cpu’s begin with Pentium D and higher, that to me, is the true minimum requirement for satisfactory operation of Win 7. If the processor can run 64-bit programs and has a memory controller built into the motherboard that can run 64-bit memory, then it is then possible to run more than 3.25 GB RAM. The sweet spot for Win 7 is 4 GB RAM. The more powerful and faster your system is, the more features built into Win 7 can run and become available and usable for you to use.
If you have a Pentium 4 hyper-threaded processor, where the second processor is a virtual core running within a single core, I wouldn’t waste my time with it. You’re not going to get the computing experience you should with such an obsolete system when running Win 7.
