My Win XP machine keeps getting a pop-up that says I have only a few days to upgrade … yet … I upgraded my free version yesterday. I have two users desktop that I use to surf and work and only do maintenance while in the admin desktop. How can I stop the pop-ups??? … Thnx all.
From the looks of it I have version 4.8.1368 free home version. But … I updated the program through the control panel. Would Avast not automatically upgrade the app to the latest version? Do I need to download the newest version, remove the older one and load the new one???
Hmmmm … I read in the forum that Avast may not be easily removed … Can I do it simply through the windows program remove? … or do I have to go through some special hoops???
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.
OK … I uninstalled the old version without the downloading and running the uninstall utility … (jumped the gun before you responded to my post … “oops”) The install went OK except it took a long time to load and I stopped the initial system scan (took waaaay too long). But, in the end I registered and it looks like it’s running fine. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for problems … any last words from you gurus???
and … thanks a lot for the help and advise from all … I loved the 4.8 version, I hope I love this too.
The first scan will take some time as it populates Avast!'s persistent transient/persistent cache feature, in order to speed up following scans. By all means, if you have any problems, post back.
OK … installed and used for a couple of days … and problems have shown up.
Avast takes a long time (long, long) scanning programs and linkages (.dll, .vsp, etc., etc.). It also slows down and stops “File > Open” and “Save” functions within programs. I also got a blue screen on one program that stated windows was shut down to avoid damage and displayed “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” (whatever that means).
… can I have back Avast version 4.8? It worked great for me!
Not really. I would suggest to reset the settings to default (Settings - Troubleshooting - Restore factory defaults - make sure both checkboxes are checked and click the Reset now button. After than, run a full system scan so that the persistent cache actually populates. And do not change settings blindly in future.
If you still have problems after that, kindly list all security software you have installed.
Done … Reset to factory preset, rebooted, applied full system scan. Looks OK at first blush … MS word launched without difficulty … next test is to try run my music DAW programs … and image editing programs…
FYI - I’m running Avast 6.0 with Online Armor 4.5 and managing the computer with Glary Utilities 2.33. The OS is Win XP Pro SP2 running on a custom PC with an Intel CPU E6550, Asus P5K SE mother-bored (tech joke), Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE and 3 GB RAM …
Thanks for the help … and, again, I’m impressed with the speed of responses.
