I have only been using avast for a month. It has been working well. The message screen appeared in the lower right corner on Sat. saying a new version was available, so I clicked on it. After it downloaded, a message box said some thing like: the program you have downloaded is not the program you had, (or something like this). Anyway I panicked and interrupted the installation. Now I am getting a red message screen in the bottom right corner saying that there is a problem with avast, click here for details. The detail read: Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download 36.avast.com (unknown:80).
I have no idea if avast is working or is broken or what. Can someone please suggest what I need to do?
Thanks!
Im guessing you accidentally upgraded from home to pro version . Either way just go into add/remove programs and hit repair option . You must be online for this to work properly.
Cloussau, avast never does this… Some programs offer the paid version and user are ‘forced’ to take it.
avast will only change the version status (Home to Professional) when the user add the key he/she had bought.
Ska, did you use any other language of avast besides the one you’ve installed? I mean, which language(s) are you using?
You don’t have to panic when avast is being updated… it’s all automatic and won’t fail, unless… Do you use a firewall? Can the firewall block the avast update?
How do you see the avast icon on system tray? Is there a red cross in it?
Tech,
I don’t use any language except English ( I hope that’s what you are referring to?).
I do have a firewall and it was running while I attempted the upgrade. I don’t know if the firewall, “Outpost”, can block the avast update. How can I determine this?
If the “system tray” is the bar at the bottom of the screen, then the avast icon is a blue ball with the letter “a”. It rotates when I send or receive mail. No red cross.
Thanks,
SKA
Yes. It was.
Sure, Outpost could be blocking the update.
You must have a program called avast.setup allowed to connect in order to update.
Check Outpost options > Applications tab
Maybe you can remove the avast.setup from the partially allowed applications and invoke the update again.
Outpost should ask you if the ‘new’ avast.setup is allowed to connect. Allow and check for persist this option.
So, you seem to be protected but maybe not updated :-
Try to update as I’ve posted before.
Outpost can and will block avast.setup if you tell it to, an ill judged deny and no more updates. Check the Options, Applications, and look for avast.setup, look in the blocked applications and see if it is there, if so Edit and accept it as a trusted application.
Thank you Tech and DavidR,
Outpost had avast blocked, I moved it to trusted applications then went to avast site to update and it seemed to work without a hitch.
Thanks again!

Ska, remember that, when you have a program update it’s probably that Outpost ask you to confirm avast.setup (the new one) to connect, even if you let it into the trusted applications. With a program update the file avast.setup will be different and Outpost will warn you.
But, now, you already know what to do 8)
Glad we could help, welcome to the forums.
