Upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Express

Hi,

I have the ADNM installed now for 7 months with the MSDE2000, and I would like to upgrade to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express. How will this impact the ADNM? What steps do I need to take to perform this upgrade? I want to remove MSDE2000 and replace it with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express. Please guide me. Thanks.

Mike

Before you start, could you please tell me if there’s a specific reason why you’d like to use SQL2005Express instead of MSDE?

Thanks

yes, no prob.

I wanted to upgrade to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (with Advanced Services SP1) because we plan to do some inhouse database development on that database engine, and as a result, I wanted to just have one MS datbase solution present on the server. So, I wanted to do the upgrade and have Avast use that database engine (Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express) instead of trying to have both the MSDE2000 and the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express running concurrently, and I am not even sure that they can run concurrently on one server, but I even if they could I would prefer to just have one, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express.

So, that’s the reason. Can you help?

Thanks,
Mike

Well, OK, in this case, you can read the upgrade procedure here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/msde2sqlexpress.mspx (“Performing an in-place upgrade” section).

But I have to say that I haven’t personally tried it. Make sure to back up the database first.

Thanks

Thanks!

So, there’s nothing specific to avast (ADNM) that I have to do first? Hmmm… well, I guess I should stop the AMS first before the upgrade… but that should be about it, right? And then just follow the upgrade instructions from Microsoft?

Thanks,
Mike

Well, the avast management server service has a dependency on the SQL service, so if you stop/restart the SQL service, the system will automatically stop/restart the AMS service as well.

As about the upgrade - do you know the “sa” account password? I’m not sure but you may actually needed during the upgrade process.

By default, the ADNM MSDE installer picks a random strong password.

Thanks
Vlk

Yep! I made sure I set the password for it. So, I know what it is. Thanks for the concern.
