Upgraded and now low signal strength on my scanner

The subject line says it all. I right clicked on the tray icon and disabled the shield control for 10 minutes and bingo, the scanner works. What should I do so I don’t have to disable the the shield control every time I want to scan something?
Thanks!

avast has absolutely nothing to do with signal strength.

If you want help, you really need to provide more information.
What OS/SP ?
What exact version of avast ?
What shield needs to be disabled in order for things to work ?
How is the scanner connected ?
Is there any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)
etc.

Windows 7 Home Premium

Avast:
Avast Internet Security / 1 PC 2 Years
program version 12.3.2280(build 12.3.3154.21)
virus definition version: 161102-0

The shield that is disabled I get through to by right clicking the Avast icon in the system tray, then on “Avast Shield Control” where I have the choice of 10 minutes, 1 hour, disable until the computer is restarted & permanently.

The scanner has a wireless connection through the home network.

I never have had this happen until I upgraded Avast. The signal received by my laptop and cell phone were full, when I went to the wireless connection through the scanner’s menu it showed a full connect but yet I still got the message
Now 10 minutes has past the message is back on my scanner “Cannot communicate with the scanner . . . . etc.” If I then disable the Avast shield for 10 minutes then try to open the scanner , it opens immediately.

It is not so much a matter of signal strength as it is possibly blocking the scanner communicating with my laptop.

Does it work if you:
only turn off webshield?
only turn off firewall?

it works if the firewall is turned off
it works if the shield is turned off

apparently when I go to the icon in the tray and “disable for 10 minutes” it disable 6 shields. I do not see a place to do this shield by shield other than the firewall through the “tools” menu when the program is opened.

What exact shield do you need to turn of in order for it to work ?

also check if your firewall is in public or private mode

How do I tell which mode the firewall is in?

Look at the settings for it.

i looked and under settings/network profiles

open avast user interface

menu
tools
firewall
settings
firewall policies
system rules: Everything is enabled. / Packet Rules: (I haven’t a clue.)
Then to Network profiles: Enable auto profile switching is checked.
Then to friends: (Another haven’t got a clue.)
Then to Advanced settings: No oublic/proivate check off there.

So where in the settings is it?

  • Enable the “Private” mode in Avast → Tools → Firewall
  • Click on Settings within the Firewall window and enable the option “Internet Connection Sharing mode”

thanks for the suggestion but that did not work

how do i get the avast firewall to “allow” my Epson scanner?

so far nothing has worked

Look in the log file what exactly is blocked and create the appropriate rule for it.
Or perform a clean installation of avast and set the the firewall to “ask what to do”
