Upgraded to Avast Pro but can't "connect to server"

I downloaded the upgrade .exe file to my computer. I clicked on it and it opened an Avast folder with “Update” selected. I clicked “Next” and it began showing server files being downloaded, but each was followed with an error message, “cannot connect to server.” It finished with the message, “there was an error while changing the product configuration.”

I don’t know if this is related, but I notice I haven’t been seeing the Avast popups saying “virus database has been updated” for the past week with the free version.

Now what?

There was a button for “proxy settings” and I changed the setting there from Internet Explorer to one of the other choices and I was able to upgrade. Since getting hit with a virus a few months ago (had Avast but didn’t have it set on automatic updates), it changed something to where I can’t connect with IE.


Have you checked to see if your firewall is blocking this?
