Upgrading from 4.8 to 5.0

I’ve been following this excellent forum (both beta and this one) for a couple of months regarding version 5.0. I haven’t upgraded to 5.0 as yet, but was thinking about doing it today.

From searching and reading the threads here it looks like I can ‘right-click’ on my avast 4.8 icon in system tray – then click ‘program update’. The word is that 5.0 will uninstall 4.8 before it installs 5.0. Is this correct?

I think I read where DavidR did it this way without any problems. I’m running WinXP (but still on SP-2). If there are problems, I would do a ‘system restore’ then start over… download 5.0 first, unistall 4.8, run aswclear, then run 5.0 install. Anything wrong with this approach?

Thanks.

You pretty much nailed it.

I would just mention that there are (were?) two versions of aswclear - one for 4.8 and
one for 5.0. I’m not sure if the one released for use with v5 will also remove remnants
of 4.8 or if the version specific to v4 is needed when removing 4.8.

I must say that I used the program uninstaller of Windows 7 and after I installed the 50.377 and of course this upgraded to the latest version
This one is pretty stable so I do not think you must be worried , all is working well but use the 5.0.396 version

The one on the web site should do it. This by all accounts has a drop down list and can uninstall a range of avast products, 4.8 and 5.0 are options.

Thanks guys. I actually have both vers. of aswclear. Since their file size was different (226K vs 154K), I thought it prudent to have them both on hand.

No problem.
