upgrading from Home to Pro

I have decided to upgrade from Home to Pro based on my experiences with Avast/Alwil.
(I have a couple problems/questions for Alwil below, so please read on.)

  1. A problem with a file that gave a false positive with Avast but no other antivirus program was fixed with the next virus database update after I posted details

  2. Alwil fixed a problem I took the time to document that prevented me from copying files from a network share to a volumn mounted in an NTFS directory; the fix was made available in a beta release withing a day or two

This kind of support deserves its own support, so I am upgrading.

However, I have a couple of questions:

  1. When I click on the One Year upgrade icon at the web site (the site you arive at when you use Avast and choose “Upgrade to avast! Professional Edition…”), the purchase web site does not appear. Has anyone else had this problem recently? (Using IE6 under Win XP Pro 64).

  2. Since I am now running the beta, how will upgrading to Professional affect this? I need the fix in the beta version.

Thanks.

The Upgrade link in avast should take you to here, http://www.avast.com/eng/upgrade-to-avast-professional.html and for me it had no problem connecting to that page, firefox is my default browser.

Are you able to browse other URLs ?
After an update (albeit to beta) elements of the program change and could be being blocked by your firewall. Does pausing or terminating the Web Shied provider help ?
Are there any error messages displayed ?

I would personally wait until the beta testing of this version is complete and is officially released as a program update. The reason I say this is once you purchase the Pro License you will receive your key by email, normally you enter this key whilst on-line and avast will upgrade to the pro version without you having to do anything else. I’m not sure how this process would go with a beta version installed, though one of the Alwil team would be able to say for certain.

The beta testing usually doesn’t take that long a couple of weeks providing there are no issues reported. Monitor the beta topic, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=27439.0 and the forums you should see when this is released as a normal program update. Then you can update to the released version before purchasing your license and upgrading to the pro version.

You will run the beta version of the Professional version and then, when the final release were done, you’ll be upgraded to it automatically.

But won’t the conversion process from home beta to pro download the Pro elements and not the beta version of those pro elements if there is any possibility of that happening (I don’t know how smart the conversion process is), then it could leave you with a mixture of beta and regular code.

The conversion process works like a charm, whenever you run it:
Home > Beta > Pro
Home > Pro > Beta
Trial > Beta (trial) > Pro or Home
etc.

Technical’s correct, if you insert a Professional Edition license key to Home beta it will simply upgrade itself to Pro beta (same build number).

BTW I have to apologize for the links on the http://www.avast.com/eng/upgrade-to-avast-professional.html page, you’re right, they seem to be broken! I have notified our webmaster, he should fix it asap. Thanks for pointing this out! (I know there have been some changes on this page - and somehow, the links must’ve gotten screwed during this process :-[).

BTW the direct link to the purchase page is here: http://www.shareit.com/product.html?cart=1&productid=171566&languageid=1

Thanks
Vlk

Vlk,

I’m happy to use the direct purchase link you provided, but just so you know: the link from the product itself, when you click on the big icon for “1 Year” still fails. Here is the URL it is sending me to:

http://www.avast.com/out.php?q=https://secure.shareit.com/shareit/cart.html?PRODUCT[192878]=1

Since this is a revenue related issue, I’d try to fix it at least as fast as you fixed the issues I found in Avast  I’m ready to buy!

Hi saph,

I’m not sure where the problem is?

On this page:
http://www.avast.com/eng/upgrade-to-avast-professional.html

there are three large graphic buttons. First of them is leading to
http://www.avast.com/out.php?q=https://secure.shareit.com/shareit/cart.html?PRODUCT[192878]=1

and thus redirects you to
https://secure.shareit.com/shareit/cart.html?PRODUCT[192878]=1

To me everything seems okay. Which of the links you think is invalid and why (what error message it produces, where you land, etc.)

I have just tried the link you mentioned (i year button) from the website and that worked fine, I was using Firefox with NoScript enabled, I had to allow shareit.com.

You say it doesn’t work, in what way any errors, etc. (a screenshot might help) ?

Yes, it works now for me too.

For the record, I am not insane - there was a period of at least a day when it did not work. See Vlk Reply #5 for independent confirmation.

Thanks all.

Don’t worry… we don’t judge anybody.
1st: sh*t happens 8)
2nd: computers are not deterministic in any way 8)

I can confirm there was a problem in the script, and our web guy told me it was IE7 only. Go figure!

Cheers
Vlk
