I installed Avast 5 pro licensed and all looked well. I had to reboot from Avast and than the boot stopped on a black screen with a pop-up text like:
Initialization from the interactive connecting-process failed.
Read the event log for more information.
Well I cant read it because the computer does not boot and.
Uninstalled Avast and yep Vista boots normal

Have you had any other security software installed that boot with Windows, like finger print security? It maybe conflicts with avast.
Please see topic: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53782.0 and let us know if it helps you.

Sorry for that too. I just missed this new path too. I just checked it, and seems works with the new avast 5.
I wrote about it here: http://catatan.legawa.com/2010/03/fixed-crash-windows-login-with-avast-5-on-acer-machine/
I hope it will help in future trouble.

Cahya.
