When ı put the flash memory disc at my usb port, avast automatic scan this memory and protect me?
avast doesn’t scan the contents of the USB, it scans files that attempt to run, it is an on-access resident scanner.
Lets say you have an 8GB flash stick, you would get very tired if avast scanned the complete contents of this flash stick every time you inserted it into a USB port.
There are work arounds to make this happen:
USB Virus Scan - http://blog.didierstevens.com/programs/usbvirusscan/
You can also protect your system against this type of (autorun) attack.
“Flash Disinfector” program, see See http://experi3nc3.wordpress.com/2007/05/10/flash-disinfector-by-subs/
This is no good.
Why scan something which isn’t running, there is no point, avast is an ‘on-access’ scanner, so when a file is accessed or tries to run it is scanned, that is the principal of on-access scanners.
avast can detect autorun.inf style attacks, because they try to run and avast intercepts the file before it runs and scans it.
İf ı want only scan and clean my memory stick, what can ı do? Do you recommend me this program → USBVirusScan_V1_7_2.zip ?
avast can scan a USB on-demand, when you plug it in right click on the Drive letter associated with the USB and have avast scan the selected areas.
All that USBVirusScan does is act as an interface, between you plugging in the USB and the anti-virus you have installed, you enter the executable which you want to scan the USB. Instructions should be on the blog link that I gave.
The file name and path to enter is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe assuming that you installed avast in the default location.
I use it if I’m going to (start the program before) plug-in a USB which I don’t know its origin or it has been plugged in to a system over which I have no control.
I also use the Flash Disinfector for immunisation.
if you have a u3 usb drive there is a version of avast for u3.
however there could be a feature in a future avast version where it detects when a usb drive is inserted and ask your permission to scan it. that would be something new!
Waiting for an antivirus to complete a scan of an 8 GB USB Flash disk would be worse. avast scans for the most critical apps/programs in your Flash Disk & scans the rest while you are browsing each folder.
