I am trying to do a boot time scan, and it found a virus in a file. But my keyboard doesn’t work (can’t select any of the options). There is no option on this system for anything but a USB keyboard, so there is nowhere in the BIOS to enable/disable it.
I saw a similar post from last year, just wondering if that fix still applies - we are running managed clients, but the engine should be the same. Here is the post:
What OS is possibly more relevant as I believe win XP can’t use USB keyboards before windows starts, even if you have USB peripherals enabled on boot in the BIOS.
OK so you have XP, I think you need to get hold of an old ps2 keyboard for the keyboard to work. Connect it (assumes you have a ps2 i/o port on the MB), before you shutdown so its connected when you boot.
“also tried only the USB”… does it mean you have two keyboards connected, or…?
As for the fix… well, I think it should work (I mean, I think it should be possible to use that file - whether it fixes the problem, that’s a different question) - but the .sum file is made for a different product, so avast! setup will probably notice an authorized change soon and revert the file back to the previous state. But it should stay there for one boot, if you’re trying to remove a malware.
On the other hand, if you’re using a managed client, you can schedule the boot-time scan from ADNM and set automatic actions - i.e. not use the keyboard at all.
Thanks for your reply, but as per my post, there is only USB. Most PCs do not have and have not had PS/2 ports for quite a while now. As for there being one on the m/b I am not sure.
I guess I will try that - will have to wait until there is actually a file there (have already booted and deleted the one the boot scan was previously trying to get rid of) to test.
I’ve a scanner that is USB-only (no power supply) and that fires up during boot if Avast’s services are loaded after the other system services are loaded.
I don’t know about keyboards, but the effect might be similar.
