Hi, i am a computer illiterate!
i have some problems!!
my Sun Java (latest) is unavailable online when my avast webshield is running. Does anyone know what I can do? i use mozilla/firefox and can’t seem to change my browser settings.
my avast anti-virus is unable to scan some files (mostly lavasoft adaware i think but two other files too.)
Why is this, is it a worry? the two other files are:
C: Documents+settings/All users/…/RELATED.HTM
c: Documents+settings/All users/…/sbRecovery.ini
I have black-ice firewall, adaware+spybot and avast, yet i am still vaguely worried about ‘silent diallers’ on my adsl/isdn, which is new. Am i in any danger which part if any of avast/other protects against that and are there any other settings I can check to stop the risk?
my avast doesn’t seem to scan my email (outlook express) have i something inactive?
5)What would avast not protect against if anything, so far seems great? s
Maybe searching the board for Java… There are some threads about it.
What is the error message? Are the files corrupted?
Anyway, nothing to worry that much.
avast could protect you but it will be better install and run Ad-aware, SpyBot and SpywareBlaster. Microsoft Antispyware could be there too.
To see if avast! is scanning emails, check one of these points:
Is the avast icon (the special one of email scanning) be shown in the system tray?
Is your email header with the lines X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2005), Inbound message and X-Antivirus-Status: Clean? (Right click the message, choose Properties and Details)
Are clean notes added at the bottom of the email? (Internet Mail provider settings)

2) my avast anti-virus is unable to scan some files (mostly lavasoft adaware i think but two other files too.)
Why is this, is it a worry? the two other files are:
C: Documents+settings/All users/......./RELATED.HTM
c: Documents+settings/All users/....../sbRecovery.ini
These are password protected files and avast does not know the password, this is normal for adaware and spybot so no need to fret
Thanks both, I am working my way through your really helpful answers (slow as well as useless!!) and have installed SpywareBlaster, (though not the Microsoft one as they say it can cause conflict to have two running - should i have that as well?) which seems great, thanks. I have also paid for the updates, about seven quid for a year seems well worth it!
It’s not clear from your posting what your problem with Java is.
Are you saying that Java applets will not run in your browser while Webshield is running? What browser settings are you trying to change?
Please give us an example of what is not working, for example a website you have visited where a Java applet has failed to run, if that is the problem.
Tell us exactly what you are trying to do and what is happening (or not happening.)
Make a note of any error messages you see and the location of any settings you are looking at:
Hi Frank,
Thanks looks like it may be timing out? Ths site I use (for work partly, which is why it is so irritating!) is www.moneyam.com in the stockwatch section, I get live data streaming which requires Java. It works when i disable web shield in avast, but not when it is on. Thanks below is my message.

To your question about having two anti-spywares running. Yes, you can have more then one running with no problems. You might be thinking about having more than one AV running on the same PC. I have a few different anti-spyware going, cause one might find/stop some that the others can’t. ;D
But I think the avast! team should look at this one: Webshield is blocking a legitimate Java application.
If there’s no comment from any of the avast! team tomorrow, I would post something about this in the avast! Home/Pro section of the forum to attract their attention.
I have had emails from avast so will let you know of developments Frank, thanks again.
I noted on spywareblaster a banned site called doubleclick.net yet I have seen it ‘go through’ on a couple of sites I visit, yet nothing seems to be being done about it by my computer. Should I be worried?
DoubleClick is an advertising company which supplies targeted advertising to web sites. They target advertising by tracking your browsing habits and suppling adverts accordingly. For example, if you have been looking at car sites and then visit the BBC News site, you might see an advert from Ford on the page. Somebody who had been viewing mortgage sites previously might see an ad from HSBC on the very same page.
SpywareBlaster blocks DoubleClick cookies (and thus web bugs) because they use web bugs and cookies to track browsing history and collect personal information:
If you’re using SpywareBlaster, your privacy is protected, but you can go further and block DoubleClicks adverts.
Doubleclick supplies ads from legitimate companies to legitimate web pages like bbc.co.uk, but there are ways of blocking their ad servers so the ads don’t appear. Some people argue that this deprives web sites of a legitimate source of income, but if ads annoy you, here’s how to block them:
Firefox users can block DoubleClick’s ads using a blocklist for the Adblock extension:
Thanks yet again Frank, that one was as I suspected, but nice to have confirmation.
What do people think of using routers? Any thoughts on thier advantages, or problems. Had a search on here but nothing really convincing either way i could find. Thanks.
