username & password for email?

Hi Guys, just loaded avast yesterday, incoming mails work fine but when I try to send I get a message box adking for my user name & oassword to connect to server 127.0.0.1
when I registered I don’t remember being asked for one

has anyone got any ideas on this?

thanks

What is your OS?
What is your email program?
Does your SMTP server require authentication?

hi
i’m using win 98, outlook express and previous to avast did not need to state a password
thanks

I assume you ran the Mail Protection Wizard Ok, so that should have converted your accounts but from what you show I don’t see any # which is required.

I also assume that the SMTP account is with the same domain as your ISP that you log on to?

The server address for both POP and SMTP should be set to 127.0.0.1
The POP server name set to: username#pop.isp.com (use the actual username and ISP info)
and… SMTP server name to: username#smtp.isp.com

You can go into the Help file within the Avast Scanner and look up Manual configuration. It will take you through it step by step. It is not hard to do.

Check the avast help file for Setting up mail Protection. Switch of your email client and run the Mail Protection Wizard - Or you can set it up manually.
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4 - look for, ashPopWz.exe - double click this and it will run the Wizard

Or see this thread for further information and advice User’s FAQ - Mail Protection.

thanks I’ll give it a try

I’m having the same problem. My out look express keeps asking for a user name and password.

I’ve tried the suggestions that I’ve read so far, except the manual thing, and nothing has worked so far.

What else can I try?

The manual thing would be a start but we don’t know what your OS is or exactly what you have tried?
What error messages are you getting?

OE, Tools, Accounts, Properties, Outgoing Mail Server.

I don’t know what you mean by “OS”.

I have Windows 98.

I’ve gone into Tools, options, security and the box where it says do not allow attachments was not checked.

I’ve run the Mail protection Wizard.

When I try to open my mail box a little window opens that asks for my user name and password. I’ve filled in the information but it keeps poping back up and my e-mail won’t open.

Which is what OS means Operating System.

I've gone into Tools, options, security and the box where it says do not allow attachments was not checked.
I asked you to check 'Tools, Accounts (select an email account), click Properties, click the Outgoing Mail Server tab' Ticking the allow attachments to be saved is fine and you should leave it ticked, but it has nothing to do with the problem you reported.
I've run the Mail protection Wizard.

Which depending on how you answered the setup questions may have an effect on this problem.
If you disable/terminate the Internet Mail provider does it work? - if not I suspect that it is server authentication or incorrectly set-up account details.

Please check the server authentication as asked and also the server information is in the same format as I mentioned before.
