i’m running win98se and i noticed that i had to configure my browser with 127.0.0.1 and 12080 but the question is : if i want to be anonymous and use another proxy i don’t have the webshield active anymore… is there a way to have both (a remote proxy + the webshield) ? ???

Yes.

  1. open the file \data\avast4.ini, and add the following to the [WebScanner] section
    UpstreamProxyHost=address_of_your_proxy_server
    UpstreamProxyPort=port_of_your_proxy_server
    (the same stuff you now have in your browser)

  2. in your browser, change the proxy settings to
    server: localhost
    port: 12080
    (this will direct all communication to the avast WebShield).

Restart the WebShield provider for the changes to become effective.

Hope this helps,
Vlk

sorry but i have no such thing in my avast4.ini :

[WebScanner]
AutoRedirect=1
HttpRedirectPort=80
IgnoreProcess=avast.setup
LoadIsapiFilters=1
ISAPIFilter1=ashWsFtr.dll

That’s what I’m saying - add those two lines (with the appropriate proxy server details filled in, of course) :slight_smile:

:-[ sorry, i must be sleepy this morning…

ok, it works fine… but seems i have to reboot to make the changes effective (stop the webshield and restart it is not enough…)

Thanks for your help :slight_smile:

Sorry, you’re right, restarting the provider is sufficient only under NT-based systems.

suggestion : it could be a good idea to add a zone in the GUI where we could enter the proxy address and port… :wink:

without having to open the avast4.ini file

Sorry to cut in everyone.

I surf the wbe a quite lot via an SSH proxy/tunnel. Will the Web Shield be scanning traffic after the above lines added to avast.ini > [WebScanner] section? As the SSH tunnel is located overseas, it is like 30k dialup on my local ISP’s ADSL (d: 2mb / u: 512k), will Web Shield slow the speed of web browsing even futher. In the following thread, you claim that Web Shield has competitive edge where it does not “really” slow down web-browsing and download speed. Can you be kind to be more specific about the “really”?
