Using Anti Vir

HI

I have downloaded the free version of Anti Vir virus scanner as yet to install.
I have a couple of questions.

1 :Not sure if free version has a resident scanner, will know once i install, but i would have to disable this as not to cause a conflict with Avast i would assume?

2 :When i use Anti vir to do a scan will i have to disable Avast first?

Please don’t tell me to check the manual or do use the search function as i did and couldn’t find what i was looking for.
If the answers were there just put it down to me being stupid and not to lazy to check.
As i have seen some degrading comments as i for one do check first.

Cheers crofty59

Hi crofty,
Antivir is a good product but to answer your question ,yes it has resident and yes it will clash with Avast!.
the beefs i had with it when i tried it out a while back were the manual update, and that updates were always around 1.2 mb, but apart from that its ok . Uses as little resources as any out there. :wink:

You’ll be better off and have a better scanner if you use BitDefender 8 Free instead of Anti-Vir. BD free doesn’t have resident scan and can be used as backup on demand. Pause avast! Standard shield when doing a BD scan, re-enable avast! afterwards.

Thanks Cloussau and FastGame for you replies

I have used bitdefender 8 free before but it seemed to take for ever to do a scan, etc twice as long as Avast doing a thourough scan with archives being scanned as well.

Have done some checking and found 90% of reviews and people comments highly recommend bitdefender 8. So have downloaded that and i might retry it.

Cheers

You can turn off the resident scanner with AntiVir and it will work OK with avast! I had AntiVir and BitDefender on my computer for a while. Clam win also works. Now I just have avast! I use the online scanners as a double check sometimes and use Jotti to check out any suspicious files I am sent or download.

You might also want to consider ClamWin. It’s a non resident scanner, open source.
The latest version can also be downloaded at

Hehe me too ;D But then i figured why would i have extra AV’s installed when i can use HouseCall or Kaspersky Online scanner…

Unfortunately you can’t do a right click on a suspected file and select “Scan for viruses with ClamWin” :slight_smile:

Thanks Cloussau decided not to install Anti Vir as i am on dialup and the updates seem a bit large to me.

Hi FastGame I tried to install bitdefender 8 twice but it would go so far then say it could not find the install exe or similar. Downloaded twice same problem gave it away as it was time consuming downloading it on dial up Over 13MB.

Hi FreewheelinFrank I am to much of a worrier like to have a second opinion on hand. Mind you Avast has rarely missed anything. (3 Times that i can recall)

Thanks a “MILLION” bob3160 Have downloaded and installed and i like what i have seen so far.

Hi darth.mikey i am to much of a worrier especially with two teen age Daughters.

Yes I like that function as a second line of defence just to check etc.

Cheers crofty59

I certainly understand you… ;D

Well crofty59,

People on dial up can do something else. My wife’s cousin Tymek he is on dial-up. I had to install Avast Home version for him, and instructed him to use it together with ZA free, and his mother does not like him to be too long on the Internet. So I bought a computer magazine, and installed the programs, went on line and just downloaded the most recent updates. No sweat. Now this has the effect his mother is satisfied and he can be on cable or DSL. Another possibility to download from whenever you are is anonymous mail.

greets,

polonus

Your welcome. Like you, I hardley ever use it but it’s nice to know it’s there.

Once again i would like to thank every one for your valuable input.

Cheers crofty59 :wink:

Actually you can!!! This is this advantage that I like over On-line scans. (also Clamwins Signature DB updates are reportedly very quick, not to mention that a lot of production email servers are going with Clamwin Database more and more)

Snippet from Clamwin web site:
ClamWin Free Antivirus comes with an easy installer and open source code at no cost. It features:
Scanning Scheduler;
Automatic Virus Database Updates. ClamAV team updates Virus Databases on a regular basis and almost immediately after a new virus/variant is out;
Standalone Virus Scanner;
Context Menu Integration to Microsoft Windows Explorer;
Addin to Microsoft Outlook.
The latest version of Clamwin Free Antivirus is 0.87

Hi lakrsrool

You are right about ClamWin as i have it installed now and mainly use to check a file if something shows up by right clicking etc.

I also do the occasional online scan.

(I think what bob3160 was referring to was with online scans you can’t right click but with Clamwin you can) :wink:

Anyway thanks Lakrsol your info was spot on concerning ClamWin 8)

Cheers ;D

lakrsrool,

That quote referred to the fact that using an on-line scanner doesn’t give you the ability to do a right-click scan selection.
The main reason for my having installed ClamWin (A long time ago.) is because with the program installed, that’s exactly what’s available to me. :slight_smile:
