Using Avast 4.8 free and Zone Alarm Free I'm told I have 2 Antivirus running.

I’m running Avast 4.8 free and Zone Alarm Free 8.0.298.000
and I was told after working with Major geeks .com for a long
time on some trouble that I have 2 Antivirus programs running.
Also, that I should turn one of them off.

Is there a way to use Avast free and just turn off
one part of Avast?

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks, SD
.

My suggestion is that you only use the firewall from ZA and continue to use all of avast!

Swiftduck,

Did you have another antivirus before avast?

If so, how did you uninstall it?

He’s using Zone Alarm.
http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/home.htm?lid=en-us

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I do that with an older version of ZA free.

Perhaps the trial version has been activated in his new ZA free and the AV in ZA is activated too.

On contrary, you should disable antivirus part of ZA (if any). The free version does not have an antivirus part.

Tech;

The new versions of ZA free might push a trial of ZA paid.

This may be an explanation, and then the next step would be to turn ZA’s AV off.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I did have AVG free before using Avast.
I believe I uninstalled it using EasyUninstaller or Add and Remove programs.
I now use Revo Uninstaller when I can use that program.
I do remember having trouble with AVG free when I tried to update
the program. I couldn’t remove the old program easily so I switched to Avast.
I’ve been happy with Avast ever since.

I think ZA free may have had an introductory offer that had more in
it than I knew about.

I’ll try to turn off ZA so far I haven’t changed the settings correctly when
I turn off ZA I still have it is set to automatically turn on when I turn on Windows XP.

Another question is :
When I turn off ZA why do I get a message saying
Your computer might be at risk.
ZA Firewall is turned off

Isn’t Avast Firewall protecting me?

Isn't Avast Firewall protecting me?
Avast! is an Antivirus program not a Firewall.

ZA Free is only a firewall. ZA Free versions starting with 8, example: ZA Free 8.0.298.000, are not bloated with MailFrontier & Kaspersky av. To get ZA Pro 8.0.298.000, it’s a separate download.

The older versions of ZA Free did come with MailFrontier & Kaspersky av deactivated. There were some rare occasions where MailFrontier & Kaspersky av became activated in ZA Free.

In the older versions of ZA Free if you purchased a license for Pro it could be put in ZA Free & it would become Pro.

From what I have read avast! Home Edition will become Pro by putting in the Pro license key. I have never used avast! Pro, so I don’t know for sure.

ZA free 8.0.298 from CNET is 59,85 MB!

ZA free 8.0.298 from Filehippo is 32,38 MB!

‘ZA Free is only a firewall’ sounds like an understatement to me.

Even if 32,38 MB is the right version, it must really be more than a firewall…

hlecter,

I was the one that first posted in avast! forums that ZA Free (before v8) came with MailFrontier & Kaspersky av.

I found in RegCleaner that ZA Free came with MailFrontier & Kaspersky av.

Since I went to v8, I checked in RegCleaner and there was no MailFrontier & Kaspersky av.

Check it for yourself. RegCleaner

Outpost Firewall Pro is only 27MB for what is a very good firewall, much better than ZA Pro even according to Matousec.com tests. The Outpost Firewall Free at filehippo is only 16.63MB and that has the same protection levels as the pro without the anti-spyware and web protection (which avast provides anyway) and none of the other bells and whistles.

I said nothing about what ZA 8 (free) contains or not.

Just trying to help the OP with the message that he has 2 AV’s going at the same time
after installing ZA (free).

I suspect his verson might contain an AV…

My old ZA installation file is between 6-7 MB.

ZA really has become bloated, sorry to say.

He didn’t get any av from ZA Free 8.0.298.000.

He isn’t telling us what other av he’s using. He probably has a trial of McAfee or Norton that came with his computer. Either he didn’t uninstall the trial or leftovers are conflicting with avast!.

Let’s hope Swiftduck comes back with more info.

It would be helpful if Swiftduck would share with us what was discussed in Major Geeks forum.

I was told after working with Major geeks .com for a long time on some trouble that I have 2 Antivirus programs running.

Okay here is my majorgeeks link

I have
Avast 4.8 Home Edition

Zone Alarm 8.0.298.000 is right.

Is there anything else I forgot please let me know.

Swiftduck,

In MajorGeeks you said you have ZoneAlarm Security Suite Antivirus.

I did still notice that ComboFix detected Zonealarm Security Suite Antivirus. I did disable where it says Shutdown Zonealarm before the tests though.

You weren’t telling us everything!

Either uninstall ZoneAlarm Security Suite & install only ZoneAlarm Free or uninstall avast! and keep ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

If you elect to keep avast! you may need to uninstall it & run the uninstall utility and then reinstall avast!.

Don’t forget to download ZA Free if you go with avast!.
