The main thing I have realized is that if you have the e-mail program talk to the antivirus and the the antivirus talk to the Anti-Spam software, the Antivirus doesn’t need the user name (it’s not doing anything but listening to ports) it just has to pass the user name on to the Anti-Spam software correctly. See below.
Note: my examples are for Spamihilator and Outlook Express, but if you remember that your goal is to get Avast to pass the username information to the Anti-Spam software correctly, it should work for other e-mail clients and Anti-Spam software combos.
Part 1.
If you have already set up Anti-Spam software (make a note of how it had your user name information and mail sever settings) then remove it’s protection from your e-mail account, so that the settings are as if you’re not using Anti-Spam software at all .
If you’re running XP or newer skip to part 2.
Now if run Avast mail wizard to protect your e-mail account(if you have’nt already). When Avast is protecting your e-mail account continue with the steps below.
Part 2.
Note: If you are running XP or newer with Spamihilator use it’s Setup Wizard instead of the the following steps.
In your mail client change account name from “username#mail.isp.net” (Avast’s format) to “mail.isp.net&username” (in this example Spamihilator’s format, please use the format noted in part 1. above or the help files of your Anti-Spam software), then change the email client’s pop3 port from 110 to 112 and if you’re using stmp change the stmp port from 143 to 145
In avast.ini change poplisten from 110 to 112 and stmplisten to from 143 to 145. then change default pop server from “mail.isp.net” to “localhost” (again this for Spamihilator, please use the settings noted in part 1. above or given in your Anti-Spam software’s help files).
Now the e-mail program talks to avast and avast sends the correct user information to the Anti-Spam software. Avast only has to check what the Anit-Spam software allows through.
I hope this helps someone.
Since I have this post listed more than once (by accident) I decided to expand on the original posts. :
