I recently downloaded Avast! home version and after a little difficulty, finally managed to get Avast! to work properly with both PopFile and SpamPal on multiple email accounts. So, I figured that I’d pass on my configuration so anyone else having difficulty with this would have an easier time of it.
[[disclaimer: this is probbaly not the optimal solution, but it does seem to work for me]]
Pre-Avast! proxy chain:
Eudora <==> PopFile <==> SpamPal <==> Server
Post-Avast! proxy chain:
Eudora <==> PopFile <==> Avast! <==> SpamPal <==> Server
Popfile is running on port 8080, and listening on port 110
Spampal listens on port 111 and uses port 25 for SMTP
Avast! listens on port 113 and uses port 26 for SMTP
[[I’ve also got YahooPops listening on port 112]]
Eudora setup:
incoming server = 127.0.0.1
outgoing server = 127.0.0.1
login : 127.0.0.1:113%@
That looks very good and should be a lot of help to folks who are doing similiar stuff with antspam proxies. It is a good idea to have avast! before spampal because spampal uses a lot of commands to get headers and body (depending on the plugins enabled) and avast! sees none of that activity.
I am not sure whether or not popfile looks at the email as different parts (i.e. retrieves headers then body etc.) but if it does it is probably a good idea to have avast! before popfile also so that all the antispam parsing is done before avast! gets the final message.
Thanks for the config, this topic gets a lot of questions here.
Edit:
On second thought, if popfile keeps some mail in a “training/spam” folder, it is probably better to have avast between popfile and spampal (as you have configured it) so that the mail in the “training/spam” folder is scanned for viruses even though it is not downloaded to the inbox. Is that assumption correct?
