I keep getting popups that say “A program can’t display a message on your desktop”. I’m using the free version of Avast with Windows Vista. I tried uninstalling and re-installing and still the message pops up about every 20 minutes. Is there something I need to change in settings menu?
If you choose ‘Show me the message’, which is the message displayed?
Which firewall do you use?
Any proxy application?
What is the exact version (build) of avast! you are using? (you can find it e.g. in the “About” box)
i am using windows firewall - it is on
i am not using proxy
the error message i get cannot be copied/pasted and is very long - Microsoft Visual C++ etc…if i have to copy it i will.
the version of avast is 4.7 home edition
You can post a screenshot, instead of copying the text.
Regarding the version - I meant the exact build (something like 4.7.1043).
To know how to post a screenshot, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).
Yes i know how to post screenshot, which i have done in my first post. however, when i click ‘show me the message’ my entire computer goes black and a message pops up that does NOT allow me to copy. I am using version 4.7.1043
This is pretty close to what the message says:
Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library - Debug Assertion Failed. Then in the message it says program c\program files\ alwil software\avast4\ashwebsv.ex\program files\microsoft visual studio 8 - and then some other stuff.
So the program referenced in the message box is ashwebsv.exe?
If so, please do the following: when the problem is simulated (i.e. the message is displayed on the screen), start the Task Manager, go to the Process tab, right-click the ashwebsv.exe entry and select “Create dump file”. This will cause Windows to write the memory dump of the process to a temporary file. When it’s finished, it will tell you the name of the dump file.
After that, please ZIP the dump file (this will normally reduce its size by 60+ percent) and upload it to you ftp site ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming. Please note that you won’t have READ access the ftp site (only WRITE).
Thanks

I have this same problem i thought it was a virus so i had professionals look @ it they saw nothing >.< im about to cry idk what to do
i have uploaded my dump file ashWebSv.zip is the file name ???
has anyone figured this out!!!
Was the “Program path” field in your report really saying ashWebSv.exe?
Because from your dump, I don’t see anything suspicious at all (the process doesn’t seem to be in any nonstandard state…).
Thanks
Vlk
