Using vpn - slows connection speed

I was wondering why my connection speed was slow, I only have a 50/20 connection.
So I tested using VPN in Avast and not using it.
Surprisingly or not so surprisingly my speed was slowed by half when testing whilst on and off.
Has anyone else experienced this?
If so, any tips and tricks to improve this?

First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.
Plus I don’t use any VPN at all, so I can’t speak from personal experience.
Having an internet plan offering 50 Mbps download speed and 20 Mbps upload speed, might have been considered reasonable but it really isn’t that great. This is usually a service where the last part if over old telephone cables.

I ran a test on my connection the download is close at 50.40 mbps and upload of only 8.64mbps (Mega Bits, not bytes) Per Second. Which is pretty pathetic when compared to full fibre connections. So if your connection has a bit (excuse pun) of uploading involved this will be the snail in the room.

Does a VPN slow your internet speed

The AI Overview in the search gives a fair indication of what can slow your speed when using a VPN

As User2966 has said here, I am on Virgin Media 1gig fibre getting 1128MB/S So slightly over the 1gig speed.

With avast vpn on i get 201.89 MB/S down , 100.96 UP speed.

This is 1 sixth of my maximum line speed with Avast VPN connected.

So yes 100% Avast VPN is very slow and slows your connection speed down drastically.
