V 4.8 and V 4.7

I just noticed that I have V4.7 home on my main pc; with 7 providers (total) with 6 running. I noticed on my backup pc that I have V4.8 with 4 providers (total) with 3 running. Backup pc has XP Pro, while main pc is XP Home.

Question is it normal for V 4.8 to have only 4 providers with 3 running. Any info in this regard, I will be gratefull.

If you did a custom install of 4.7 (or add remove programs, change) and got rid of some providers when avast updates I guess it would conform to what the 4.7 setup was. So the 64,000 dollar question was did you do that ?

If not, it is incorrect, what providers are on the installation and which are running ?

It’s not normal, check if you’re infected or if your settings are correct.

DavidR, backup pc had very old copy of Avast, infact pc pretty old. I think I went to program update and updated the program along with VPS. I am newbie at fooling with Avast, since it has been trouble free on main pc. The backup pc is the only one I am concerned with. Maybe I should do a unistall and reinstall? What should I look under to see what providers are running etc on backup pc?

Ok Tech, thanks will do. Thanks to you DavidR also.

I would say a clean reinstall would be advisable.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

Now uninstall (see below), reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot, install the latest version, reboot.

It may be necessary to disable the avast! Self-Defence module (Program Settings, Troubleshooting section) if you are unable to uninstall using the Add Remove Programs before running the Uninstall Utility.
Or, boot into safe-mode and start aswClear.exe from there.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the last avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Left click the ‘a’ blue icon and try to start the ‘stopped’ providers. Post any error info (screenshot).

Tech and DavidR, I did a uninstall, down loaded a new copy from download.com. Did a search for Alwill and avast. Deleted any entries found. Run my registry cleaner(mild one). Reinstalled. Now got 7 providers, 6 running. I was doing this while I guess you were posting info about the unistalller utility.
Thanks to both of you for the very informative and quick respones.

Your welcome, I trust all other aspects are running well.

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)
