When I try to disable shields for say 10 minutes, the UI freezes and I have to kill it in task manager.
Why should I want to disable shields ? - well because since I installed avast! 5 I’m having problems logging in to skype, in fact not just problems I can’t log in to skype ! So I’m trying to check to see if avast! is the problem or not.
Any ideas anyone ?

I see you are still running Windows Service Pack 2 so you should install Windows Service Pack 3 that has been available for over a year and a half that contains several Critical Security updates plus performance improvements.
You need to start Internet Explorer then go to Tools then Windows Update and download all of the available updates.
Go to Control Panel then Automatic Updates then select Automatic (recommended) or at least Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them.
Go to Secunia Online Software Inspector then run it to see what other applications are vulnerable:

I’m curious too Avastus, I ran skype quite happily before avast 5 with sp2 so what does Yokenny mean ?
I disabled shields in avast 5 also without the freeze problem I mentioned above which has only appeared today.
