v5.0 Mail Shield SSL Accounts Settings

I don’t quite understand the Mail Shield SSL Accounts Settings in v5.0, even after reading the help file. I am using gmail as my e-mail provider, which is encrypted by SSL, and I access my account solely through the web interface with Firefox 5.6. In order for my e-mail to be scanned by Avast v5.0, do I need to set up the pop3 and smtp protocols and ports for gmail in the Mail Shield SSL Accounts Settings or does the Web Shield take care of the scanning of e-mail accessed via a browser? Thanks!

Hi chgoguy7,

If you are using the webmail interface of GMail, then the mail shield will not scan it. The mail shield is designed for the use of things like thunderbird etc.

As for the webshield scanning the GMail page, I am not too sure…I don’t think it will as it is https secure…

all you do is to remove the tic on SSL in the mail program if you use (like me) windows live mail to download mail from Gmail
and the port is 25 and 110 you don`t do anything in v5

I didn’t even change the ports in TB, just turned off SSL, and left it at what was set and it works

chgoguy7 is using the webmail interface of GMail though…

when you remove the "tic" in windows live mail and outlook express the port jumps back from 465/995 to 25/110

@chgoguy7
if you worry about virus in the mail, Gmail is scanning all in and outgoing mail with McAfee and Authentium
if gmail found a virus you will never know, they just remove the mail

Yes, TB changed the IMAP one to 143 and the SMTP one stayed at 587…but I finally get emails scanned

ehhh....jepp the ports are different on IMAP

Hi. I just installed new Avast 5 Free Edition (I used Avast 4 Home for 3 years) and I have a problem with sending and reciving mails, with Opera Mail Client and Outlook Express. My mail provider is Gmail.
Here is how I set up Outlook Express.
Is it correct? Should I put something in Avast Mail Shield Expert Settings?

I am getting this error:

The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender’s e-mail address. The sender’s e-mail address was ‘acamanic@gmail.com’. Subject 'slfsjfiwjdij ', Account: ‘pop.gmail.com’, Server: ‘smtp.gmail.com’, Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: ‘530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. 16sm2371887fxm.8’, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

The settings looks correct to me…

Hello,
Is the Mail Shield running ?
How is the account in Mail Shield/Expert Settings/SSL Accounts configured ?

Yes, Mail Shield is running.
At first, I used default (I set nothing in Expert Settings). Then, I tried following:

For POP3:
Host: gmail.com Protocol: pop3 Port: 995 Encryption: SSL

For SMTP:
gmail.com SMTP 465 TSL
gmail.com SMTP 465 SSL
gmail.com SMTP 587 TSL
gmail.com SMTP 587 SSL

Nothing works.
It works if I turn off Mail Shield and configure E-Mail client for direct access to POP3/SMTP Gmail servers.

And what is the error message when receiving ?

The server responded with an error. Account: ‘pop.gmail.com’, Server: ‘pop.gmail.com’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR Cannot establish SSL, SSL_connect error 5’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90 - This is what I get for reciving mail.

An unknown error has occurred. Account: ‘pop.gmail.com’, Server: ‘smtp.gmail.com’, Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: ‘421 Cannot establish SSL, SSL_connect error 5’, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67 - This is what I get for sending if I put Host: gmail.com Protocol: SMTP Port: 587 Encryption: TSL, or any other combination.

Actually, Host: gmail.com, Protocol: SMTP, Port: 465, Encryption: TSL is the only combinaton that doesn’t give me an error but it wouldn’t send mail.

I also tried to shut down firewall but it doesn’t work. I am running Windows XP Pro SP3, ZoneAlarm Pro 5.5 (I know, it is very old version) and Avast 5 Free Edition.

For Thunderbird, the settings of no encryption and port 587 work fine for SMTP with gmail. (see attached). For OE you may need to use port 465 and no encryption-I am using Vista and don’t have OE.
Update: Tried port 587 for smtp with Windows Mail (Vista successor to OE) and that sent mail fine via gmail.

No, mail goes but it is not scaned by Avast. I tested this with Opera Mail Client as it ís my primary mail client.

Opera Mail Client is a webmail program and is not scanned by POP mail scanners, including Avast!

I am not using Opera Mail. I am using Email client built into Opera browser to access Gmail. It is not webmail. I am using POP3/SMTP protocol.

Do you have your mail client set to non-secure SSL off so that it doesn’t encrypt the mail internally? If so, the only way it can get to gmail is to have avast! take care of the encryption handshake and scan it. If you are encrypting it internally, avast! can’t see it. Have you tried your client with SSL/TLS off and forcing port 587 when you edit the account setup?

I turned of encryption in Opera mail client.
I tried with ports 110/25 and it doesn’t send/recive mail.
I also tried 465 for SMTP in Opera and I can send mail but Avast doesn’t scan it (no statistics in Mail Shield and no Clean Note in message even I check thet option).
