various problems occured

Hello,
I am new to Avast as well as being new to these types of forum. However I have some problems now with my computer after I installed Avast.

First off I downloaded Avast as
well as sygate before removing NIS. However didn’t install them right away.
Used NAV to scan them just as a precaution.

After getting a lot of feedback I decided that I would give this a try. It looks pretty good however after scaning my computer came up with some corrupted files. Explained below.

I’m using ICF as a temperary firewall while I check out the perks or corks.
OK First off uninstall NIS. In which I did the way the company stated, going through the Add/Remove button. However when removing Norton WI Update and Liveupdate it stated that there are still some Norton products.
Therefore I down loaded all the 3 files needed to remove such programs from symantec. Being that this
computer had a NAV (60) trail before I upgrade to NIS 2003 then 2004.

After I followed their instructions it stated all was removed successfully!

Therefore I went on to install Avast! It does appear to be working well
except for the Outlook / Exchange. It states that provider is waiting for
subsystem to start! However after reading some posts I found that’s nothing to worry about. Thank you!

After installing I did a virus scan. This is my problem. When it finished.

C\Document & Setting\Owner\Local setting\sr6 [1].gif System cannot read from
specified device.

C\document & setting\Owner\Local settings \UPX

3 of these came up all having the same thing. Unable to scan archives
Corrupt!

So from there I thought it would be best to do a full chkdisk scan. Nothing
seem to be wrong there.

Next Defrag in which I got: Files that cannot be defragmented 2 12kb
Documents & Settings\Owner\Local Setting\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\61BWF28G\sr6[1].gif
Never had this problem before!

I tried to figure this all out but couldn’t even find the files. Not even in
search.

I also done a Auto scan chkdisk in where it reboots first. Not sure if that
would help. But it didn’t.

Now when I go into My Computer, highlight C, Click properties then tools. It
now states under defragmentation 'No defragmentation tool is currently
installed.

However when going into start, programs, accessory, system tools, defrag. It
appears!

Also decided to go into registery . For me I am not that brave, don’t like going into something that’s so complex!
However notice a file under software. (symantec). So appearantly symantec removel
tools did not remove all of their products. Could this be corrupting the
other files? And is Avast and Symantic conflicting with is starting to go on downwards?

My computer has a preinstalled OS and they did not download XP back up! So
if I have to delete that file how do I do it safely? Should I uninstall Avast and if so could it be done through the Add/Remove without a problem like Symantic gave me?

Please Help Me and also I am not a computer wise so I would need step to
step on things in order! Thanks!!!

My Computer:
Mfr: HP Pavillion 700
Model: 725N
Type: Desktop
CPU: Athlon XP 2400+
Installed RAM: 512
OS: Window XP
Disk Drives: 3.5:, 1.44 MB disk drive, CD-RW, DVD-ROM

I hope that gives you enough information to help me fix this problem! Thank you for listening!

Actually, I don’t think you have any problem with files corruption.
The avast!'s message that the archive is corrupted just means that the file doesn’t seem to be complete (or in the expected format), it doesn’t imply any hard disk or file system corruption. The error may be caused either by avast! not fully supporting the archive format, or the file on your disk simply being incomplete. I find the later case quite likely; you didn’t paste the full path (there is an ellipsis in the middle of the path) - it may e.g. be some files in your browser cache that were not completely downloaded. Nothing to worry about, I’d say.

Thanks! That’s how those showed up in the log view of avast after scanning. However after I defrag. where it said files cannot be defrag came up with c\Documents and Settings\Local Settings \Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie 5 \61BWF28G\sr6[1].gif

My problem is that something is wrong for I cannot get the defrag icon through my computer, right click c drive, properties, tools. It states not installed! But yet it’s there through the start menu, accessories, system tools, defrag! That’s why I was wondering if avast and something else is conflicting causing some major headaches!

Again thanks for your comments
