various program updates not applied

From this Forum, I discovered Secunia OIS and FileHippo’s Update Checker and have run both. Let’s just say I was startled to find several programs that I know have been updated (using files downloaded from each respective company’s website, no less) listed as being outdated, even though the Firefox plug-in shows they are not :frowning: I’m hoping someone can explain to me why this has occurred and, more importantly, tell me how to ensure that future updates are applied to the system, rather than to just my web browser!

Thank you,
ML

i dont think secunia is checking browser plugins…only that you have latest browser version…or am i wrong ?

filehippo update checker only look for new version of programs from filehippo website

As far as I’m aware Secunia doesn’t check browser add-ons, extensions for any browser. Some plug-ins may be included but they would be the likes of JAVA that are also installed outside of the browser.

Had the same problem with Secunai and like you , when checked the websites found the latest versions were installed .If I can remember correctly Google Earth was one .

My apologies, Pondus, DavidR, and j.m.reid, for not posting a reply before now, but I made a rather ridiculous error that resulted in my having to reinstall my OS :frowning:

I appreciate your responses and have had a bit of time to explore my Programs folder. Turns out the “outdated programs” Secunia found were actually files from past software versions that the updated version never removed during installation. I was able to delete one of those outdated folders, but the other one does not appear to exist–even with hidden files and folders revealed ???

FileHippo’s Update Checker is also giving me a hard time. It blithely neglects to inform me that the “new” version of Java it continuously reminds me to download is a beta!

Sigh,

Keeping your system up to date can be a big task if you don’t keep on top of it.

Having had to do an OS reinstall, you should be able to keep it uncluttered with lots of applications making it easier to keep up to date.

I only occasional visit Secunia, but I have never used the filehippo update check and given what you said about it offering beta builds, that is way over the top, a beta should never be considered an essential update. So unless you are actually using a beta build of an application it shouldn’t offer a beta update, doesn’t sound like the checker is that refined.

I have never had a problem with the Filehippo update checker nor Secunia PSI informing me of outdated applications.

I do not install beta versions from Filehippo either.

Isn’t it strange how filehippo somewhat looks like a giraffe ;D

Bloody good camouflage ;D

This time, I didn’t do it :stuck_out_tongue: The lovely malware on my PC that essexboy is helping me fix got bored with deleting my desktop icons and disabling my shortcuts, so it deleted my OS last night instead (grr!) So, once again, I’m apologizing for not responding before now, DavidR, YoKenny, and craigb.

DavidR, I’ve attached my FileHippo Update Checker results. From the screenshot, you should be able to see why I inadvertently downloaded the Java beta.

Yes, not very helpful when the JAVA 1.7.0.0 version is not amongst the other Beta version updates.

In my wanderings through the Forum, I’ve noticed users responding with a +1 or -1. I’m sincerely hoping this means “I agree” or “I disagree,” respectively  , because I’m about to say . . .

+1

Yes, it is that they agree or disagree with the previous/quoted comment.
