hello avast, i recently got an error saying avast failed while updating them, click here to update them, when i click it i get an “The Package is broken” error, same when i click update avast please help
Repair avast:
- Control Panel - Add/Remove programs - avast!
- Scroll down and click on ‘Repair’.
- Follow instructions.
Try the following:
1_ Reboot.
2_ Avast main GUI → Settings → Update → Proxy Settings → select “Direct connection (no proxy)”.
3_ Just to be on the safe side to cover all situations, you may want to reboot again (generally, not needed).
Do not attempt to update immediately. Let Avast do its work. The problem might be a temporary down time of some server or your internet connection.
If this change is not enough, there are additional things to try, so let us know.
ady4um why do you keep butting into everyone’s post all the time ? i believe Asyn has offered the correct soulution at this time so untill the OP come’s back with an answer after trying Asyn’s suggestion first then we may try other alternative’s.
all of the above ideas didnt work the first one, the first post, said the same error, and a full update is required, the other ones just didnt work

@craigb,
Now that the topic is solved, just to fulfill your curiosity I’ll answer this absolute OT that has no importance at all, for anyone.
In this topic in particular, you’ll see that the difference between Asyn’s first post and mine is about 2 minutes. Since the time shown in the post is the time when you start to answer (not when you click on “post”), and my post is larger than Asyn’s, then you can understand that we posted almost simultaneously.
You may also know by your own experience in forums that when you click on “post” and for some reason the topic changed since you started the post, there is a message stating to look again to new changes. I usually look at the changes, and I either cancel my post when it turns irrelevant, or adapt it to the new circumstances.
But that’s in “theory”, because in practice, there are certain (infrequent) situations where the message about the topic changes is displayed, but the changes themselves aren’t. And this topic is one of those cases. I clicked on “post”, the red message showed up, but Asyn’s post was not presented; only the OP was. So I decided to post anyway.
Even if I had seen Asyn’s post, I might had decided to post anyway. There is no reason to wait to see if the OP decides to give feedback, when the contribution is valid. Actually, the OP may see that as a plus. The user might take both (or more) suggestions, try first whatever seems to be easier (or choose some other criteria), and if it doesn’t work as expected, there is no need to re-post and wait again.
Now, let’s take other situations. Some other member of the forum is posting suggestions. You read them, but you might think that other (different / additional) comments are relevant, or some point/data/info has not been mentioned yet and it could actually be useful. So you (I) post.
Or when an OP asks something in addition, but several hours later. The member that was originally assisting the OP is not on line, and you know the answer. So you post.
If the members with less number of posts avoid posting simply because some other “older” member has already posted (or might “eventually” post because he is on line), then probably most of us wouldn’t post almost never. Let’s all of us leave the forum 24/7 to DavidR, Asyn, Tech and a couple more of “veterans”.
There are many additional reasons to post. As long as I am respectful, and my post is not lying or leading to confusions, or with some completely irrational ranting, I’ll keep posting whenever I want. My posts will include whatever I want, as long as I respect the rules of the forum.
Some user may don’t like it? He/she can skip my posts, the same way I skip other posts.
I don’t “always” write something, even when I read some very inaccurate posts. Sometimes I contribute with what I think is a correction to some inaccuracy (IMHO). And sometimes I only read with no contribution.
I don’t criticize others whenever I disagree, or if I don’t “like” their posts. In my years of several forums, sometimes I receive an undeserved insult. I tend not to answer those. Do you think that simply dismissing those type of posts means that they are right?
Everyone may feel that there is something not so “likable” about a forum, a topic, a post, or a forum member. I respect freedom. I respect others’ opinions. I respect forum’s rules. And I welcome other user’s posts.
So, if I see a good reason to post something that might be useful, I usually do, but not always.
@khannan786, my apologies for this absolute OP. Glad you solved your problem.
I can’t be bothered reading all that :-X
This same scenario happen to me last Sunday morning. Repair option, manual virus def. updating, reset proxy settings, etc. did not work. About 6 PM that evening after a reboot, Avast auto updating starting working all by itself!
I think there are bugs in this new release and telling people to reinstall and then going through the hastle of reconfiguring sucks big time.
More case in point about bugs. On my first of the day cold boot yesterday, all my Avast Realtime shields were disabled. Reset them with no problem. Booted multiple times thereafter and everything was fine.
Again more bugs.
