Version 26.8 forces a Smart Scan, completely ignoring user settings like “Fast Scan: Not Scheduled”, Smart Scan unchecking “Automatically continue Smart Scan”, and “Manual execution”.
Out of nowhere, a “Smart Scan Notification” popped up in the bottom right corner (exactly 7 days after installation). It forced me to race against time like mad just to click and stop it before it ran, almost like dealing with malware! (Did this just waste my SSD/HDD Host Reads for nothing?)
Why does it secretly execute a “Smart Scan” like a virus, completely disregarding the fact that the user explicitly chose not to schedule any “file scans”?
Smart Scan is just a way to scare people and serve upgrade ads.
Question: why are you worried about host reads on your SSD and HDD? It would be near impossible to wear them out with reads. It’s writes that are limited, but even then you’d really be hard-pressed to actually manage to significantly cut into the lifespan of a modern drive.
I updated a few days ago so I’ll keep an eye out for the one week mark and see what Smart Scan does. I have it set to only run manually. So effectively never.
Absolutely, Smart scan is just scareware. Real time shields protect you and if you for any reason think your PC is infected, Full system scan is better choice. Real time shields do all the work anyway, so Full System Scan is only optional.
I think the crucial question is what the OP asked.
Why is it doing it, if as I suggested set it to Manual Scan, I haven’t been troubled by this issue.

The File Scans are in a different Section of the UI to the Smart Scan Settings and choices there wouldn’t impact if the Smart Scan runs or not - you have to disable that independently of on demand virus scans.
