Version 7 is a disaster

You may want to change your settings to “Ask” instead of turn it off; Avast won’t update it if is set to ask with that version.

Be careful with toolbars and plug-in’s with other AV’s and know how to remove remnants before you install the software. That’s what makes Avast nice – easy install and uninstall, user-friendly, 24/7 support staff that are fast and responsive, but not all AV’s catch the nasties as good as others.

We hope that you will stay with us, but we respect that this is your machine and your decision.

@ ^Candy^

There has been a new updated version of Avast that fixed many of the problems of the version you are using. Please upgrade via the GUI or uninstall and do a clean install. If you do not want Chrome as your default browser, do a CUSTOM install and unclick the Chrome button on the bottom left page during the install, and make sure you reboot your machine prior to using Avast. The new version is 7.0.1456.

No, that’s not what I want. I had of all my computers set to “Ask”, and have now changed it to “Manual”. That’s exactly what I want. I don’t want to be bothered with any of this nonsense again.

That gives avast a brief reprieve because I expect the 7.0.1426 version will continue to work OK for awhile. I don’t really expect avast to fix the later versions, very small chance IMHO.

@ Johnny Bob
Excellent reasoning. I want my AV to protect me but I don’t want it to update. :o

SDAberle, been having similar problems. I downloaded 1456 last night, and whatever was happening on my machine appears to be better so far. At first I thought I was having problems with RAM memory as elements of the browser would just disappear (like a RAM leak). This would include the bodies of opened net pages in all tabs…not like links…formatting, text, pictures, controls, links, everything but weird lines (or some other useless thing). Then I would notice the words were missing from the icons on the desktop, and no programs would open. A right click to task manager and the menu was only partially filled. Also, I noticed some weird behavior in graphics, like the graphics for a program when it’s on the task bar. They would appear faded, like faded jeans. Really unusual. Inevitably, without a restart, I would end up with a blue screen shortly after the problems appeared.

Thanks for this post. I just swooped by here to see if there had been any issues with the latest 7 builds, because I like avastusertboots had been getting a prompt to install Google Chrome on reboots (I leave my machine in stand by). I was curious to see if Avast could be the culprit for my blue screens and malfunctions. This information is exactly what I was looking for so thanks again. I am just very glad to be on the right track with this. I had been thinking it might be either hardware or Opera which just went from 11 to 12 recently.

Note: the reboots I performed were to recover from the problems I mentioned before. I had been getting BSODs 2 or 3 times a day over the last few days before yesterday. At that point, I caught on that I was going to have to reboot when the browser (Opera in my case) failed.

I think you might be right robertmb. 1456 seems to have fixed the problem for me temporarily. Hope Avast picks up on this soon. I noticed that 1456 addressed some blue screen problems. Perhaps they are aware of the issue already. Also, it came pretty quickly on the heels of 1451.

I would say not necessarily RejZor in this case. I have been having similar problems, and avastusertboots mentioned the constant prodding to install Google Chrome. Not that it is definitive, but I would say that could indicate that Avast is having problems. The program seems to believe it has just been updated on every restart or something similar…

JB…I just see in your last post you found the setting to turn off the updates

Just like to say…Avast has been a good program and service for a long time, AND it’s free. Constantly improving and updating the program is not easy, but they do it and have kept things free. Hats off to Avast. There may be other good ones, but for me it’s three years of flawless performance until now. Not going to give up on the Avast team. They’ve done alot for me, so the least I can do is bear with them through problem times…

Correct. Now as soon as I get tired of coming here to read this forum, I’ll soon forget about it because nothing will remind me. Peaceful bliss. I may go several weeks or months that way, I don’t know. I was happy with 1426 til the nags about a new version finally prompted me to come here and investigate. I don’t do anything automatically, in general, for any software. Updating has become a self-serving self-feeding mania and I prefer to stand aside.

That philosophy might have worked years ago. With today’s ever changing technology and increasing threats,
not staying up to date is begging for an infection to bite you.
It is however your computer and not mine so if that makes you happy, then so be it.

Baloney! That’s crazy, part of the update mania.

It is however your computer and not mine so if that makes you happy, then so be it.
Correct. It makes me happy or I wouldn't do it! :)

@JohnnyBob----You also say in your sig that you have disabled cloud services. That means you will not receive any streaming updates which is one of the major improvements of the newer versions of Avast. I certainly hope you have not also turned off auto updating of the regular virus defs because that would be foolish in the extreme.

You mentioned using MSE, I guess you’re not aware that that program was using cloud services well before Avast started doing it. It was doing it from the first version that was released and there is no option to turn it off.

You just want to argue. I don’t. I will now turn off my subscription to this thread and will not respond further. Good bye, and good luck.
