Very Persistent Cookie

I have a very persistent cookie from a site called ie9forum - see attached image.

Ccleaner won’t remove it - it still shows under Cookies after every clean (whether run as user

or administrator). Comodo System Cleaner doesn’t remove it - either that or something just keeps

re-installing it every time they do remove it? No browsers are running - and they ahve all been cleaned of cookies using their own tool.

Can anyone offer any advice on how to get rid of it - and does anyone know if the site itself is

a problem. Avast doesn’t flag it, and SAS, MBAM and Avast all say my system is clean, but might

a cookie that keeps coming back indicate malware?
Many thanks

Do you use IE, especially IE9?

Do you overclock your system?

Have you tried free Revo to get rid of this cookie? http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Do you have something in your browser(s) to get rid of LSO cookies?

I would continue to scan for malware as a precaution since I never heard of this cookie, but I also tend to run on the extra cautious side.

Thanks for the response. I think my status as a full member may be giving a false impression of my expertise - I got there by asking questions!

I have tried IE9, but uninstalled it and went back to IE8 (because it wouldn’t load Trusteer Rapport.

I mainly use FF, but also use Chrome occasionally.

I wouldn’t know how to overclock my system (or what it is).

I have downloaded revo and will try to find out how to work it and report back.

I have BetterPrivacy in FF - nothing in other browsers that I know of.
Thanks

I have run the browser cleaner in revo - but the cookie is still there.

Interestingly, although the revo browser cleaner for ie8 ran OK with just cookies selected, when I selected history as well it said it couldn’t proceed because the other program was busy - but all it directed me to from the switch and rectify button was start menu.

As far as I am aware ie8 was not running, and opening and then closing both 32bit and 64bit versions of ie8 still didn’t let me proceed. Any ideas?

(Which reminds me why I tried ie9 in the first place - ie8 seemed to have developed a problem that it hung for about a minute when I tried to clear history. I went to the Microsoft download centre to try to download and reinstall ie8, but all I could seem to find for w7 was ie9 beta - ie8 download was only listed for xp and vista.

So I tried ie9 and had problems, which is why I went to the ie9forum site (and hence got the cookie) in the first place! Otherwise this computer has never been to anything but the most mundane of sites.

Any further help/ideas much appreciated. Thanks

(I have updated MBAM and run another full scan - still says clean)

Evercookie http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=64266.0

If this should be an ‘evercookie’, I didn’t find a way to remove it from IE browsers yet.
Does anyone has info about this…??

Thanks for all the info. This is not looking very encouraging.

Despite having prevented storage on silverlight and flash sites for FF and ie8 (and uninstalled Chrome) the ie9forum.com cookie is

still detected by Ccleaner.

More worryingly, I actually registered at this site, and they have my e-mail address, so I am concerned that if they are prepared

to place everlasting cookies they may well be up to a bit of spamming too. The site seems to be hosted by webguy at live.com - is he

known for this sort of thing?

Any other suggestions welcome.

Is this evercookie really any sort of threat? If all it can do is track what sites I visit I’m not hugely bothered - just very annoyed.
Thanks again

some are threats some are not
cookies is just a key to trigger some software to work,
some cookies has the list of your system and its essay to find compatible system you choose to run ;D
but there are some stupid use it as a remote of your system. it cannot be detected because it is pure file but text format can easily converted into working file

will if you don’t have a pace of mind about that it can be found here C:\Documents and Settings\username\Cookies.

username is your name ;D ::slight_smile:

if you cannot delete it manually us unlocker  to delete it

edit: oh i forgot cookies folder can be seen only if you enable show hidden file and folder :-X :-X 8)

Best Regards!!!

Did you try the removal posted in the link in the quote above?

Also, using NoScript will certainly help.

Yes, I tried the uninstall method for both FF and Chrome. The cookie was actually from IE8 I think though (at least when selected

in CCleaner it shows the IE logo - though I can’t find it manually, and neither can winpatrol). It remained in place.

There have been some other developments that cause me to wonder whether this is really an evercookie problem though (in which case I may

owe ie9forum.com an apology).

After a lot of delete attempts using Winpatrol, IE8 delete browsing history and Cclean the ie9forum.com cookie finally diasppeared

(not sure exactly what did it) - only to replaced by the cookie of one of the websites I had beeen checking for a solution -

superuser.com plus related stackauth.com.

See attached image.

Now this happened at a time when I am sure that both silverlight and flash had application storage disabled, so I can’t see how the

evercookie placement technique could work? Also I have no reason to think that superuser.com would pull such a trick - they are

rated as reputable by a lot of website review services.

Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

Did you happen to reboot your system before the cookie disappeared, sometime’s iv been been getting cookie’s left over after a ccleaner scan but after rebooting there always gone,
except for one that i know from the windows gallery that took about 3-4 days to disappear.

Do you look at the WinPatrol Support Forum ???

Security Cadets Forums> PC and Software Help> WinPatrol Support
http://forum.securitycadets.com/index.php?showforum=57

I see that you do not use hpHosts nor MVPS HOSTS file that blocks the cookies for me.

By the way hpHosts is provided by a fellow countryman in Newcastle named Steven Burn.

@craigb - no, rebooting didn’t get rid of them.

@YoKenny
I’ve updated to the latest Winpatrol+ - but it didn’t find them either - browser open or closed - is that what you meant?.

I don’t use a hosts file because I don’t know anything about them, Until I upgraded to AIS and my firewall didn’t work I used a

computer simply as a tool (with IE and windows firewall defaults). Then I came to this forum to ask about my firewall, and finished

up installing things like ccleaner, winpatrol, revo, FF, noscript, RP, BP, ABP and secunia to worry myself with.

Since hphosts is provided by not only a fellow countryman, but also a fellow Geordie from Nyucassel, I may give it a go sometime

though (and find something else to confuse myself with).

I got rid of the cookies displayed by ccleaner in the end by just moving them to the “cookies to keep” page and then right clicking

on them and removing them - gone! (not my idea - someone on the piriform forum suggested it - whether it has really got rid of them

or just stopped them from displaying I’m not really sure - and it doesn’t explain why they were there in the first place).

I still wonder if this might be something to do with an IE8 issue. As I said above the revo browser cleaner for ie8 ran OK with

just cookies selected, when I selected history as well it said it couldn’t proceed because the other program was busy - but all it

directed me to from the switch and rectify button was start menu. IE8 was not running, and opening and then closing both 32bit and

64bit versions of IE8 still didn’t let me proceed. I tried IE9 in the first place because IE8 seemed to have developed a problem

that it hung for about a minute when I tried to clear history. So does ccleaner

Any advice on how to repair/reinstall IE8 for a w764bit system? The MS website only seems to offer download for vista.

Thanks

The latest WinPatrol V19.3.2010.2 fixed the problem for me:

I don't use a hosts file because I don't know anything about them,
Please read: Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

After reading Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File hopefully it will remove some confusion.
