Hi all
having a really strange issue with older laptop so heres a bit of history. will try and explain it as best i can.
ive got 2 gaming laptops on the go and both connected to bt home hub 5 via ethernet (also tried with wifi).
windows 7 64bit avast update auto updated and works fine. licence auto renewed last week.
windows vista 32bit (dont laugh) worked fine on previous avast software.
manually updated it a couple of days ago.
update loaded fine, rebooted.
after reboot firewall is padlocked but its shows subscription active with 364 days to go.
re entered licence key and accepted. rebooted and firewall still padlocked.
thinking there was something corrupted i look in start folders for avast folder to see if there is a fix button but there is no avast folder there.
in the end i done a system restore. still no folder in the start menu but at least the firewall was now unlocked. the strange thing now is the firewall slider button is on but it is showing below “youre not connected to a network” even though in network and sharing centre it shows connected.
ive rebooted computer, ive rebooted hub and im totally lost.
now while the firewall was locked (so about an hour ago) i could get on websites with no issues.
now the firewall is active avast is telling me im not connected to a network while my computer is telling me i am but no websites will load.
am i having a blonde moment and overlooked something simple.
hope this has made sence and thanks in advance for any advice.
quick update.
its defo the firewall thats blocking all connections.
rebooted everything including comp and hub. all connections still blocked.
turned off firewall and within 1 minute connection to all sites resumed. turned on windows firewall for now.
so no one has any ideas about this issue.
now having to run on vista with firewall turned off as otherwise no connection even though computer shows i am connected. luckily the laptop is only used for emails and minimal tasks.
People view for all sorts of reasons, the topic title is not specific so many will view it to find out what it is. It doesn’t mean they can offer a suggestion.
I had looked at it before partially out of curiosity, but after all of the preamble I wasn’t really clear on what the issue was or a possible resolution.
I use avast free on XP Pro, win7 home edition and win10, I only use the latest avast free version on my XP system which has Agnitum Firewall Pro. As I don’t use the avast firewall.
I’m just wondering if there are many people using Vista with 17.2.2288 is why there is a lack of response.
There is also information missing that can be relevant.
Like the exact OS/SP, the exact avast version, other security (related) software that is (or was) installed and such.
thanks for the reply guys.
didnt know what else to call it in the header.
vista home premium 32bit service pack 2
avast internet security
version 17.2.2288
build 17.2.3419.0
definitians 170304-0
windows security centre all off
clevo gaming laptop (8 years ago it was the fastest available)
P9500, 4gb ram, 260gtx
used mainly for email and downloads now as upgraded to much faster gaming laptop.
as previously said, everything worked perfectly fine on the previous build until it updated last week. works fine on my newer laptop.
as you can see from the picture the back image now shows the firewall on after 3 installs and a system restore but also shows you are not connected to a network.
the front 2 show the laptop is connected to my bt hub with full signal and a speed test shows 52mbps
as this post has dropped to page 4 im bumping it up as need to resolve this if i can.
if not is there any way to downgrade to previous version which has worked perfectly for the last 3 years
thanks for the link Pondus
good idea but doesnt it defeit the object of paying a licence fee for a component which worked perfectly until the latest update.
Uninstall Avast in Control panel [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #3]
Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear. [Running Avastclear is normal mode will give a prompt to go into Safe Mode]
Check : Once uninstalled check in device manager>view>show hidden devices if there is anything related to avast with a yellow triangle… if so, uninstall it and reboot.
Install the version you downloaded.
Reboot.
Paid: If you have a paid license, insert the license key/activation code after the reboot at stage 6.
this was going to be my next thought with a total clean and start again.
ive just submitted a ticket about 15 minutes ago to see if the techies know of this issue and then i will start again.
cheers
Ticket responses take around 1-5 business days to get a reply. They’ll probably advise a clean install too so no harm in trying. I run Avast Internet Security and the Firewall runs fine here.
