If I open the on access scanner go to standard shield and click customize, a little window will appear. If I close that window, the memory usage of ashserv.exe will drop.Anybody know why?
No. How big is the “drop”.
Mine increased by 4KB (40.660 to 40,664) when I did it just now.
Is it important?
What window appears?
Me too !!!
Started with “mem usage” of 22000k approx, configure of the standard shield (customize button) causes a little window of configurable option to appear. closed the window by clicking the little x on top.
Memory dropped by HALF to 11000k approx.
So I did the same with the “web shield” service and then memory usage dropped to 1,000k !!! a drop of 90%.
Assuming Windows task manager does not have a bug - this is indeed very strange.
Unfortunately, the first action I did in FireFox raised the memory to 11000k again, and it is slowly climbing.
The reason I am here in this forum is that yesterday Avast ate 900,000K of my virtual memory, which you can see in another post.
So I am wondering if anything is wrong in this latest version ?
I was using Process Explorer (XP Pro), not TM.
Mine dropped from (used memory) 740MB to 738MB^^

Weird. 600k drop here. Memory leak? Weird. :odd:
The ashserv.exe was using about 20meg of ram and when I did that, the memory usage dropepd to 3 meg of ram.Just find it a little weird.
I think this is actually a normal behavior for an idle system.
When you use “configure”, and there is nothing else going on, the number of active memory pages drops.
All that memory allocated for virus detecting is not actively used, just the configure bit.
And that is what we saw.
When the system is active - downloading, processing some data, Avast is busy with that (in addition to configure) and the number of active pages stays the same. That is what Vladimyr and +AdDicT+ saw.
What worries me is that Avast tasks are the only ones in my system where the virtual allocation is 4-5 times that of the active used. All other tasks has more or less the same numbers for active and allocated. Which means that Avast is not using most of the pages it allocated. Why is that ?
Weird. Probably, its because of the attemp to change settings. In order to apply the settings, the said process, ashServ.exe, tries to reload itself without turning it off. Some sort of like refreshing a web page.
Theory only. ???
