Video Error Problems...could use some help.

I know this has nothing to do with Avast, but some of you are so knowledgeable about computers in general and I’ve received so much help with virus issues, I wanted to post here. (I did try another forum back when the problem first popped up, but never received a reply.)

This is an issue that started a while back when I deleted an old program that wasn’t working properly (StartStop Dictation and Transcription Software). I think that might have triggered whatever is going on now because that’s when the problem started. Maybe when it was deleted it took some files that are needed for other things? Anyway, whenever I try to play a video (AVI at this point), in WMP or Cyberlink Power DVD, the programs crash. Some DVDs will play in Power DVD, but only the audio. This is the error message:

AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 11.0.5721.5145 ModName: libavcodec.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 001fd9e3

AppName: powerdvd.exe AppVer: 6.0.0.2128 ModName: libavcodec.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 001fd9e3

I also notice that something called ffdshow video decoder and ffdshow audio recorder look like they’re running when I try to use WMP or Power DVD.

The videos play fine in a transcription program I use (NCH Software’s Express Scribe), but that’s not very good for watching videos (tiny window). And an AVI file I downloaded from my camera plays in QuickTime (haven’t tried anything else in QT)

I can play videos on YouTube, Facebook, and websites just fine.

Any way a novice like myself could possibly fix this, or should this be left to a professional?

Thanks for any advice!

Pam

When you uninstalled the program it removed audio/video codecs that windows media player used to play the video/audio.

codecs are used to play files that windows media player doesnt support( like avi, mkv, mp4, and a lot others)

The codec pack i like is k-lite codec pack.

I usually use the standard as it has what i use the most, however i would check and look at each one to see which one meets your needs.

I suggest you use VLC, this should fix all your problems at once…

+1

You can also reinstall WMP from here to repair it http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player and imo i would uninstall Power DVD as it’s bloated and slow compaired to VLC Player.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I ended up downloading the codecs (thanks Castayr!), and that seems to have fixed the problem! When trying to install, it had to uninstall an older version, and then when it was installing the current one, it found three or four files that were broken and they were deleted. After that the install went fine.

Thanks again! Yay!

(I knew someone here could help… )
