Virus caused mouse to freeze and stop internet connection

Have a virus on an IBM Thinkpad with XP that has made the mouse freeze and I can’t get online. I can run Avast but with no mouse I can’t select C: drive to then get Avast to scan.
If anyone has any suggestions I’d appreciate it very much. Thanks in advance.

boot into safe mode and scan from there type f8 repeatedly during boot
post up the log from another computer if you can or else give us a synopsus
any other anti spyware installed like windows defender etc

Thanks for your reply. I’d already tried booting into safe mode but the mouse was still frozen. I tried booting from a Ubuntu disk and running Avast from that. It didnt’ work. So I just cut my losses and reinstalled XP. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

what are you going to do different so that this does not happen again?
good luck
come back and visit when you get back up

mouse did not work in safe mode
anybody else ever have that happen?

That’s what I don’t like about a USB mouse in that it requires that its drivers be installed in order for it to work.

Wherever I go I carry PS/2 mouse that’s the one with the little round connector on the end not the one with the rectangle USB connector.
