Last night I downloaded IamBigBrother monitoring software. During the process Avast! alerted me to trojans and directed me to place them in the virus chest. I did this and then did not restart the computer so as not to launch iambigbrother. Since it was recommended in so many places I did not realize the security risk involved. Upon further Googling I am uncomfortable having it on the computer.
Here is what is in the virus chest as listed in the Log Viewer: Win32:Trojan-gen{Other} and Win 32:IamBigBrother-D[trj].
Since I haven’t restarted the computer and I immediately placed this trojans in the virus chest I am hoping that IamBigBrother is not operating. I am not at all tech savvy and am intimidated just reading about what steps might be necessary to fix the problem and uninstall the program. Is it possible that the program itself has been sent to the virus chest? It would be wonderful to know it was there and could be deleted.
I actually just got the computer back from being cleaned and serviced because of blue screens and other glitches. So depressing to have shot myself in the foot so soon. I am running Avast! and Windows Defender. The tech that worked on my computer said he’d put Ad Aware on but I don’t see it. I had SuperAntiSpyware and AVG on before my earlier computer troubles but they had stopped being able to scan. I haven’t reinstalled them yet but they would likely run fine now. My OS is Windows XP with service pack 2.
Any help would be appreciated. I don’t want to have to spend the $ again but I am so frustrated I’m ready to take it back to the shop and let them figure it out.
If you said so… if you answer the virus warning sending it to Chest.
If not, probably, the virus was caught by WebShield and aborting the connection will block the virus even before any file was save in your computer.
I won’t suggest Ad-aware… too weak. Keep SuperAntispyware only.
This seems to be a legit program,( a commercial keylogger ), did you download it from Iambigbrother.com ?.According to there website,to access/uninstall you should Click Programs / Run and enter IVIEW. Click OK. At the login window enter “iambigbrother” as the default password. .I suppose its only natural that Avast picked it up as a threat, albeit a possible legit one,had someone else installed it
Q: After I have IamBigBrother installed, how do I access it?
A: Click Programs / Run and enter IVIEW. Click OK. At the login window enter “iambigbrother” as the default password
Q: How do I un-install IamBigBrother from my computer?
A: Access IamBigBrother through the IVIEW program and click the Setup button. Next, select the Add/Remove From Windows button and select to uninstall it from Windows. Restart your computer.
Yes, it is termed a legit program and I did download it from iambigbrother.com. I had seen it recommended in several places before I downloaded. But after I got the trojan warning I did a bit more looking around and found it listed on malware/spyware list sites as being a high security risk that should be removed as quickly as possible. I am concerned about the possibility of someone else having access to financial and other important info. I didn’t realize when I downloaded that the monitoring would go beyond my computer. Am I understanding this correctly?
I have also read that it is difficult to completely uninstall once it’s installed. This is why I have not restarted my computer as that would complete the install, unless, of course, it is safely tucked away in the virus chest, which I think Tech was saying it is. Is this right?
The challenge with the info you provided from the iambigbrother.com site is that I don’t think the program would be installed to uninstall unless I restart my computer, which seems like that would make things worse. But, like I said, I just don’t know or understand enough to figure it out. Would the IVIEW program be there even if I haven’t restarted since downloading?
What you have to understand is, this program is classed as a serious information stealing trojan ( a major threat ) ONLY if you didn’t install it yourself. If you installed it deliberately ( which you did ) and you have the password to access the info, or delete the program,it is not a threat. It is only difficult to uninstall, if someone else maliciouslly installed it,without yor knowledge. The idea with legit keyloggers,is that you can spy on other users on the computer ( eg your children ) and access the info from another computer.Avast doesn’t know whether this keylogger was installed legit and so has flagged it as a threat. You will have to restart your computer at sometime.Only then, will you know if this program is installed.
The reason I did download the program was to help keep track of my children’s online interactions. I have K-9 for general web monitoring but it doesn’t yet have IM and chat features, so I thought this was a reasonably priced round-out. After downloading, I did read where some have had illegitimate iambigbrother spyware on their computers without their knowledge. But some of the spyware list sites also referred to iambigbrother software, mentioning the point of its services and still underscoring the a risk factor. I also read where some folks received no support, no response to emails, and had trouble getting a clean uninstall. Then, after paying for it with my cc, I received only a notice of an additional offer - no confirmation or invoice email. To balance, the reason I downloaded in the first place was all the recommendations on the various review sites.
The bottom line for me is I don’t want private information on my computer or online compromised and I don’t want to risk getting into something I can’t get out of. Since it is a legitimate keylogger, is there any way to be sure that the information being gathered won’t go beyond me?
Probably what I need is a class to better understand the technical workings of the computer, but finding the time is a challenge. I know the importance of having anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, etc…in place. It is just frustrating to read the how-to’s when something does go wrong but not be able to understand it or be fearful of messing up the whole thing. I digress…
Forgot to add to last post - if I do keep this, what do I do with the items in the virus chest. I think I read somewhere about making exceptions. If I decide to uninstall, I’ll need to fully install it first (restart my computer) or would it be gone by just deleting the items in the virus chest? Thanks!
While it is true that the site for InternetSafetySoftware.com shows clean, the site for Iambigbrother does not show clean. Perhaps this is why InternetSafetySoftware.com has a separate site for this software. The picture below is from your own link above.
