virus chest

In reading the help file, it appears that the virus chest can be opened so that one can see what is in it; place copies of important files in a secure place; and that avast copies important system filesl This seems pretty straight forward, however when I tried to open the chest, I receive the following error:

Initialization of Chest files

Action was completed with errors!

Program cannot use Chest client: (null)
—>Description: Virus chest server is not running. RPC communication failed.

Initialization of Chest files

Program will try to load all Chest files from the following server: (null)

Action was completed with errors!

So…does anyone know what this means? or is this normal?

Thanks for the help, just trying to understand the program

Please provide a little more information like what operating system and what version of Avast you are using. Looking at the rpc (remote procedure call) error, my guess is you are using windows XP or 2k. If so, make sure the service is running.

Also make sure you have installed ALL security updates and patches from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Sorry, should have given you that from the get-go -

Win 2k, sp4 -
all OS updates available have been applied to date
Sygate, Ad-aware, Spy-bot - all latest versions
Avast version 4.1 Home Edition, bld June2004 (4.1.418)
latest VPS file version 0429-2

Now as far as services:

avast! iAVS4 Control Service Started Automatic LocalSystem

avast! Antivirus Started Automatic LocalSystem

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Started Automatic
Remote Procedue Call (RPC) Locator Manual

Could the problem be the RPC Locator?

I run XP here and just checked my services. I got the same ones running and the same settings. Everything is working fine here. I suggest you wait for a reaction from the Alwil people here before doing anything.

OK, Thanks a lot for your help

RPC error (Remote Procedure Call, a Windows absolutely necessary service) is generally corrected if you ‘repair’ your installation (Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast antivirus).

No, it’s not normal. Other solution could be changing the storage type from ODBC to XML.
See on ‘Settings’ in my signature (search for the word XML) or download the avast External Control (link on my signature too) and choose the option to change the storage type.

Hope this help
