virus chest

hi all am new on here and wanted some advice please, i have used avast free for a couple of years now and it works great best freebie on the net, i was looking in my virus chest after running a scan laptop clean as a whistle ;D however when i opened all chest files i found (kernal32.dll/ winsock.dll/ wsock32.dll) listed in there, i scanned each item in turn but they were not infected so why would they be in there, they are in the wifes laptop as well; hope someone can help me thanks in advance ken

Hi, Welcome to the forum.
Don’t worry.
The chest contains different category of files. The ones you have seen belong to the system section of the chest.

(The 4 chest sections are: “infected”, “system”, “user” and “all”.)

Normally the only ones you should be concerned with are files in the “infected” section. Leave the system files alone. It’s where Avast stores information about legitimate Windows files that might enable a repair in case the originals become compromised.

From what I understand, the technology is not that useful with todays malware, and will be dropped/changed with Avast 5 release.

hi tarq thanks for the quick reply, i wasnt sure about them when i saw them listed but i am now, surprising what you can learn on these forums ;D thanks again ken

You’re welcome.
There are some experienced users here who know all sorts of stuff. Much of what I’ve learned about computers and security has been on this forum. ;D Wealth of knowledge.
