Im using Free Avast 5 ,I upgraded from version 4.8 yesterday and since I installed over 4.8 it has its virus chest(I dont know how it got there, I was not aware of it until today), please see the attachment .Since these are not viruses I`d like to know if it is ok to restore .
Thanks
that ok! just keep it there forever just in case the original files in the system32 is gone cause by heavy malware attack that the time you restore it. but if you restore it now it will prompt you that there the same files in the same location.
i have it also in my avast chest, that three item is a very important files in window to take care of. its just a copy.
i am not really sure :
but in my system if i am going to delete the kernel32 in my avast chest it cause the high cpu usage every time i open application software and make my system hung-ups.
i cannot determine why its happen to my system, so i copy it again from system32 into avast chest and its normal again.
so much better to keep this in my avast chest.
i am also observing what is the connection to the avast chest with the operation but i did not have the hint yet.
i suggest to leave it there, but if like to experiment then try to delete it. i have information that this three is not a part of 5.0 :
Nothing will go bang in your face, they were copies of originals, if you had checked a) that they weren’t infected and b) the originals are still in place. Had you tried to restore them Windows would have had an almighty whinge when you tried to replace system files that were in use, so in a way a good job you didn’t try to restore them.
Why they are in there is beyond me as these were related to 4.8 and after an install of 5.0 over 4.8 I had zero files in the chest. If you first uninstalled avast 4.8, there is even less likelihood of there being anything there as the avast4 folder and all sub-folders including the Chest folder should be removed.
So I don’t really know why they are actually displayed in the avast5 chest.
I don’t know why it is there, I have been using avast for 6 years and as I said I installed 5.0 over 4.8 and they aren’t in my chest. Certainly no remnants of 4.8 on my system after an install over the top of 4.8 and nothing displayed in the chest. I had to place some samples in there just so I could use them to gather images I have used in the forums, helping others.
Now I don’t know if you were using the beta versions of 5.0 or not or if that might even have been a factor that it retained the files in the chest as I didn’t get involved in this beta for any duration and restored my system using drive imaging software to go back to 4.8.
I indeed checked that the files were not infected and that there were doubled ,that is why I concluded to delete the files. It is a fact though that Avast did not delete the 4.8 virus chest and kept it for some reason.
Well the avast4 chest and avast5 chest are in physically different installed locations, so avast5 wouldn’t see the avast4 chest, even if it still existed.
So there would have had to have been some deliberate act to transfer those files and if so why didn’t it transfer mine. Either that or it makes the copies of those files when it installs avast5, in which case where are mine.
So there are some inconsistencies that I can’t begin to see the logic or reason why it would be different from one user to another.
Version 5 also recorded the registration code from 4.8, it makes me think that all additions made by the user or as an outcome of his use ,are kept with 5.
Yes that is the case for the registration info if you installed 5.0 over 4.8, but that doesn’t explain the inconsistencies as I didn’t inherit any old chest files and I had lots of samples in there over and above the 3 system file backup copies.
At first I had though that someone had taken notice of all pleadings not to display them and the people that thought these were infected and tried to restore them.
So will this ever be resolved/created for those that did install the early 5.0 builds ?
Personally I would rather these files even if in the chest weren’t displayed as they caused more consternation than anything else. The amount of users that thought their system was infected because these were in the System Files section of 4.8 chest. Now that there aren’t any different display sections I believe it will just make it more confusing.
