How to make sure that virus database is updated regularly ? It seems it is not on Home free edition ?

Check your Update settings and set them to automatic.

avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.

Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file.
The updates are incremental.

I’ll second this issue. My Avast 4.7 Home is set to automatic updates, and I’ve double-checked this several times. I have a steady Internet connection. I’ve been taking note of the virus database updates since installing last week, and it does NOT update.

As of today, the virus database was dated 11/06, the last time I did a manual update. I clicked the iAvs button, saw some hard drive activity, and the database date changed to today.

So, on mine as well, automatic updates are not happening – I have to update manually.

Also – even on manual updates, I don’t see anything other than my HD light flickering to let me know it’s checking for updates. Is there any other indication?

How are set your avast! services?
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

I suppose you have to have four avast! services:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)

The two first of them should be Automatic loaded and the two last Manually loaded.

If the auto update function fails to update you should be getting errors to that fact, are you getting any errors ?
You could also tick the Show icon in task bar tray, see image, this will at least indicate that it is at least checking for updates.

Are there any entries in the avast Log Viewer, Information, Warning or Error sections relating to update failures ?

Do you use a proxy to connect to the internet ?
Is the Update (Connections), type of connection set to match your connection method, Dial-up, permanent, etc. ?
If you use a proxy to connect to the Internet, click the Proxy button and ensure it is set correctly.

Hi,

I have the same problem after a period of 23 days without internet, nomore automatic updating of the viral database.

I look on the forum trying to found some explanation and I found this :

What is bold, i have not !!! So I desinstall Avast to reinstall it after that, same result.

Before I did do that I asked for another key licence and with the new key licence the problem is the same. No automatic updating.

Did you have an idee where I must looking ???

The correct name is aswUpdSv.exe, not ashUpdSv.exe.

BUT - services are usually not an issue. You should check the setup log (\setup\setup.log) if it contains any errors re updates (scroll down and check what’s the timestamp of the last entries in the log).

I found the setup.log file. It contains no word “error” and the latest time notation in the file is : 14:32:35 (time in Europe)

This is not a complaint or concern ;D

Sometime ago, I reported that I had a vps logging issue. That is the vps updates didn’t always show up in the log files. No problem, I just check about avast and it tells me if I’m up to date. For the record, I’ve never missed an update.

So if you are relying strickly on the log files, don’t. Right click the “a” icon and click about avast. It will give you the info you seek.
