If the auto update function fails to update you should be getting errors to that fact, are you getting any errors ?
You could also tick the Show icon in task bar tray, see image, this will at least indicate that it is at least checking for updates.
Are there any entries in the avast Log Viewer, Information, Warning or Error sections relating to update failures ?
Do you use a proxy to connect to the internet ?
Is the Update (Connections), type of connection set to match your connection method, Dial-up, permanent, etc. ?
If you use a proxy to connect to the Internet, click the Proxy button and ensure it is set correctly.
