I am wondering if there is a way to find the list of viruses that Avast will check for. I use to use McAfee and they has a nice listing of each virus and what they do and such. I feel much safer knowing that certain viruses are taken care of or not.
More importantly, my bank has recently notified me that one of my computers is compromised with the Gozi virus and that I need to scan and show them that the system has been cleaned. I didn’t scan, instead I recovered the disk to factory and now when I scan it is clean but since I don’t have a list of viruses I have no idea if it was a virus that would have normally been detected and cleaned or not. Is there a list of viruses that I can see if they are being detected? Thanks.
most of the virus vendors use different names, and even in those cases where the name is the same you can not be sure if it is the same samples unless you have the MD5
If you have a sample you can upload to virustotal and see who detect it and with what name or you can search by md5
There is no direct comparison between different AV companies as there is no standard naming convention, so you get lots of different aliases.
I would be highly suspect of my bank telling me I had a virus, this sounds more like a scamming/phishing attempt than a legit task of your bank.
How would it know if your system is infected, do you allow it to run scans on your system, have you installed AV software from the bank to be able to do this, etc. etc. ?
Avast sees some variants of this as:
Avast! - Win32:Trojan-gen {Other}
Hmm, yea I was thinking it might be a phishing attempt or something but they called me up directly and refered me to the emial which basically just told me to scan the system and printscreen the scan results with a blank (non filled in) page of thier login as proof to unlock the account. I can’t see how any of that can get my information, at least I hope. I don’t really know how they would know if I had a virus or not without scanning unless that perticular virus does something when you load the bank page.
I really would like to know how they are doing this without having a) installed something on your system or b) you authorised a scan of your system.
As your system should effectively be isolated from the internet by your firewall unless you authorise a scan, either that or they are doing something that I would consider morally bankrupt (sorry couldn’t help myself).
When you now talk of Them calling you directly, I also start thinking scam, as this type of thing has been all over the news of late about people ringing up to tell you your system is infected.
Then you talk of them telling you “told me to scan the system and printscreen the scan results with a blank (non filled in) page of thier login as proof to unlock the account.” I get the hebe jebies. It is so easy to forge an email to have a link appear to go to a bank site but will land up at a phishing site.
These combinations make me very suspicious indeed and far from being reassuring would make me highly suspicious.
Do not click on any link in an email purporting to be from your bank, manually type in your bank URL, or better still call them directly (not using any number from an email) and tell them just how suspicious/distressing that this is and if legit is a highly suspect practice is.
Personally I still feel this is a more sophisticated phishing attempt that at the very least needs reporting to your bank and give them a piece of your mind if found to be a legit communication.
