In the virus database section of Avast what is the last column for that has a coloured yellowish colour for a title instead of a name and why do some of the virus definitions have a line through this section of the column while others are blank?
where do you see this?
avast home or pro?
if in pro, via the simple UI or via the enhanced UI?
I haven’t the slightest idea, I have never even wondered in the 4 and a bit years I have used avast.
I don’t see any with a line through this section, care to give some examples ?
I don’t find the virus database particularly helpful and that is why I don’t often venture in to it.
Its avast home edition and the Avist skin (I think)
it just resembles a column that serves no function or purpose unless the Alwil team use it for something ???
I would personally like to see more information viewable through this feature but it is still helpful in its current state to see what your covered from
I see the yellow column header, the examples are of the “why do some of the virus definitions have a line through this section of the column while others are blank?” statement as I don’t see any lines through this section.
Because there is no standard for naming malware/viruses then even that is of limited use as you can be looking for a virus name and not find it in the database, possibly because it could be a different virus name.
I can’t find what you’re saying…
Please, post a screenshot (see how: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=8982.0).
You can use Gadwin PrintScreen to get a screenshot (http://www.gadwin.com/printscreen/) or the free version of WinSnap 1.1.10 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_winsnap/?2173).
Tech,
Start avast Antivirus > Menu > Virus database
I did it… what I can see is the ‘coloured yellowish colour for a title instead of a name and why do some of the virus definitions have a line through this section of the column while others are blank’
Sorry Tech, misunderstood your request - I see what you meant now.
See attached image, it clearly shows lines through some of the column
any ideas on this???
I think this is down to your graphics card as I don’t see anything. I have selected the same entries shown in your image and no lines.
how can I check to see if its my graphics card?
ps do they not appear on yours when you scroll up and down the entries using the scroll bar?
You can’t easily, you could however run the skinless option, run ashSimp2.exe and open the virus database from there and you will see a different version (see image) this may be less of a graphics issue. If you still see the lines then the only way to test is borrowing a different (more powerful) card.
They don’t appear on mine period. I scrolled through them before my first reply where I said I couldn’t see them
DavidR any tips on cleaning computers of dust and dirt to make them run cooler, any safety tips to avoid frying the computer?
If I need repairs what should I do to secure my computer (eg password etc) to avoid any technicians snooping my info and will they need access to my files to install the fan/power supply or should it do that itself when I get it home?
What about the original subject, the lines, what heppened when switching to skinless display, don’t just leave that hanging ?
The only tip is not to use a vacuum cleaner as it can build up static that can damage sensitive components. You can buy cans of compressed air to blow dirt out. Try a google search for cleaning a computer, I bet there are many and varied options.
about the skin changing it to skinless didnt resolve the issue and I have always thought the fan wasnt performing well over the last few days, thanks for your advice
sanctuaryforever, I can’t see that lines… mine is like David’s one.
But what is the relationship between this problem and the computer fans? ???
Sanctuaryforever,
I too have the lines you are talking about, so you are not alone. I don’t know whether it is a quirk of the video card, but perhaps for comparison mine is a Geforce 7300GS PCI graphics card. I probably would never have noticed these lines (which appear part of the grid or border structure) without you having mentioned them, but I’m certainly not going to worry about them. I wouldn’t think they have anything to do with the database entries themselves.
Hope this helps
I notice that I too have the lines in the top of half of the page whenever I scroll down page by page. If I drag the slider down then the lines do not appear.
The condition is identical on two XP systems here. The systems have different brands of graphics card (and neither is the same as as reported by olddog).
However it seems to be just a cosmetic issue and I doubt it has anything to do with overheating either.
can you guys perhaps post a screenshot so we can compare?
my graphics card is ATI Radeon 9250 (old, I know), the reason I mentioned the fans is that I suspect my system is clogged with dust and I thought it maybe overheating
