Real quick question and I hope it doesn’t sound stupid. If you have your settings to check for updates every 240 minutes, and your online and a new update is released, will you get the new update then,or have to wait til the 240 minute mark is reached since your last update check. Thanks in advance.
You get them as soon as possible. If your computer is off at the time the vps is released avast will update the next time you turn it on.
By the way, you receive streaming updates as they are released. Also there are days when only one vps update is released on other days
there could be two, three or more depending upon what kind of nasties are floating around the web.
Thanks,I guess one of the reasons I asked was yesterday I had to do a self install of a new modem from Comcast to replace the one I had. Of course they said everything would be a snap but for me it wasn’t. Anyway when I was finally able to get back online I happened to open the avast UI which always takes me to the “maintenance” page and I noticed information which was in red that an update or something was available. I don’t remember what it said other than the red wording which startled me. I happened to right click on the avast icon in the task bar and where it says “show last pop-up message” it was grayed out,I couldn’t click on it as it wouldn’t do anything. I rebooted and avast did update itself and the show the last pop-up worked normally. Now I never changed any update settings or did anything different. I guess the question should be,and I don’t know if its because of avast 8 (which I run) but,if an update is available and like I said my update is set for every 240 minutes, would you get this alert in red (I’m calling it an alert) on the maintenance page until you at least do it manually or your normal update time frame is reached? (for me every 240 minutes) I didn’t get a chance to take a screen shot as I was a bit startled by this and after I did the reboot and checked everything was OK. Could this possibly be just a new feature of avast 8? I’m waiting for the next update that comes out to see if I’m getting updates automatically. I have the link to the virus update history page that shows the latest updates.
The reboot should have fixed it. You might try doing as the screenshot shows, direct connection-no proxy.
Thanks, also if it happens again I’ll take a screen shot just to show you what it said. I don’t anticipate anymore problems, hopefully, lol.
OK ,seems like avast won’t update unless I re-boot or do it manually, this never happened before. I changed settings to direct connection-no proxy. One other thing, just to check something out I changed the settings in the update to “auto update every 30 minutes” to see what would happen. I opened the UI and it said the last update attempt was 45 minutes ago. Because I changed it to 30 minutes shouldn’t it have attempted to update after 30 minutes passed. The streaming updates are enabled. I’m going to bed so won’t see any replies til morning. I usually turn the computer off when I go to bed but will leave it on just to see if any updates do come though.
Computer stayed on all night. BTW I am using the latest version of avast. I took a screen shot when I got up this morning,as you can see the last update attempt was at 5:37am 3/30/13. It says the last update received was at 7:14am 3/30/13 however the current versionbeing shown is still the last one I got when I re-booted the computer last night. I know a new update was released at 6:15 am this date according to my laptop which also runs avast. Shouldn’t have this update been received. Can someone please respond thank you. Once again I didn’t change anything. The only thing I did was install a new modem from Comcast (see my previous post) Like I also if I re-boot or manually update it works OK,my update setting has always been set to automatic updates
so last update check was and hour before last release…unless i am confused about this pm/am time
then it should download it at next check
when computer is on it will check for updates at every 240 min default
anyway if avast does not show any errors, why worry…install forget, and let it do is business
Pondus thanks for replying,I don’t understand as I was told in a post from this thread that with streaming updates they would update automatically. I thought 240 minutes was the default but I saw that it could be changed so I set it to 30 minutes. You mean me doing that won’t change anything as far as receiving updates every 30 minutes instead of 240 minutes?
Guess what,I’m sitting here reading the reply post I just wrote and the update came though. So all is right with my world. Sorry for taking up the time for those trying to help me. I get worried when an avast problem weather real or not happens to me. Again many thanks for the great team here who help computer illiterates like me. If this thread could be deleted please do so.
i think the lowes that work on avast free is 120. even if you can sett it lower
i have always used the default so not sure
avast usually release two updates a day, more if needed, some days one and even none…it depends whats going on out in the virus world
then you also have the streaming updates…evry new VPS update will contain all previous streaming updates
the program itselfe know what updates it need…so unless there is any error warnings, nothing to worry about
Pondus I started this thread because of what happened after I installed the new modem from Comcast,I’m sure you read it but again this is the reason I was worried,

The red notice on the UI maintenance page right after I installed the modem caught my eye as I have never seen that before. I was thinking it was something new to avast 8. So is a streaming update different from a normal update then?
So is a streaming update different from a normal update then?they push out new signatures as soon as they have created/tested it.... so one reason why i dont see any need to change the default update check time. not sure if evry signature is pushed out like this
I happened to right click on the avast icon in the task bar and where it says "show last pop-up message"this only work if you have not rebooted since last pop-up
Thanks again,no need to reply.
