I just updated Avast to the latest version 4.6.665.
When I wanted to update the VPS file it says that it now has the latest version,
but in the main screen it still gives me version 521-5. (25-5-2005)
The manual update says it already has the most recent version 522-14.
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
Is there a reason you can’t update windows to SP2, as this is more secure and allows you to also have the latest version of IE (V6 SP2)?
I use disk imaging software (Drive Image, there are others) for back-up and disaster recovery. If I’m going to do something major I take an image of the C: drive and save the image on my second HDD (you can save it on another partition though) and if I experience an un-resolvable issue it takes about 15 minutes to restore the last back-up image.
This software is relatively inexpensive now, especially if you use ebay and don’t buy the latest versions (just ensure it is compatible with XP and genuine). Get the previous version which will have dropped in price since the new version release.
Imaging software has saved my a*s on a number of occasions and has paid for itself many times over and been money well spent.
Just did a repair as you described above.
Now Avast shows the correct information about the VPS file.
For your information, it did download the correct VPS file but did not show it correct on the information screen.
Thanks for the information about disk imaging.
Right now i’m using avast as a virus scanner, zone-alarm as firewall and I check my computer regularly for spyware etc.
I am not on the internet that often, but consider about using Firefox as a replacement for IE.
