For the last several days I have not been getting the popup that says my virus database has been updated. I right clicked on avast and show last popup is greyed out. I have updated them manually but would like for them to automatically update. I have the box checked for this to happen. Any help will be appreciated. XP SP3 latest version of avast.
Just had the same problem on my WinXP box. I had not booted it for a few weeks and when I did that to install the 9.0.2021 update, the virus defs would not update and the installer hung. Avast team Sr. Member drake127 replied to my post in https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=151290.msg1099522#msg1099522 that I should check for instup.exe having an instance already running when I started the install. That turned out to be true. I tried a few suggestions I found elsewhere in the forum, but could not get instup.exe to go away. I went back to a restore point I made before the first update install attempt and the instup.exe was still hanging around w/o updating the virus defs. Since I was going to replace 9.0.2018 anyway, I just used awsclear in safe mode to start over w/9.0.2021, rather than take the time to get 9.0.2018 back on track.
So you might check Task Manager to see if instup.exe is persisting over time w/o the defs being updated. If so, perhaps someone who has cleaned this up without a (re)install could help if you’d rather not take that leap. If instup.exe is not the problem, then my next try would be a Control Panel/Add-remove Programs/repair option for Avast. I would have tried that myself, but if instup.exe is running you get an error message about that.
Thank you for your reply. I did a clean install and that seems to have fixed the problem.
