Virus definitions failed - Downloading of VPS failed - Avast Mobile Security

Avast Mobile Security version 5.2.4-12094-7ef88de
Android version 6.0.1
Cyanogenmod version 13.020160710-NIGHTLY-mako
Android security patch level - 5 July 2016

I received a “red alert” to update my virus definitions. I attempted a manual update and received this message:
Virus definitions failed - Downloading of VPS failed - Check your connection to the Internet.

My Internet connections work.
I do NOT have Google Play services installed.
How can I manually download and install the latest virus definitions or VPS files?
Is there an alternate apk download other than Google Play Store for Avast Mobile Security?

Hi,

we don’t officially support devices without Play Services.

That being said, the app usually works fine without them, except for the cases where they’re needed, of course, and some occasional dialogs.

Play services are not needed for updating of VPS. There are still some reasons why the download and loading of VPS might fail, like not enough space, some file permission issues etc. The most likely, though, is that the app was resigned with a different certificate. By any chance, did you download it from some shady site or did you do some kind of “patching” yourself?

Thank you for your reply. 8)

I did not do “patching” of any sort.
I have a Nexus 7 with Google Play on it.
I downloaded the latest AVAST from Play store with the N7 and copied it by Bluetooth to the Nexus 4 with CMod.
It installed great.
That is how I have been doing updates of AVAST.
I have been using this version since the last update but a few days ago I started getting these error messages.
I have not changed file permissions.
I am using 9.92 GB out of 12.92 available.

I resolved this issue. I deleted all data and cache for Avast Mobile Security and uninstalled the app. I then reinstalled the app and virus defs seem to be updating OK now.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

I also have this error massages many times in the activity log.
Do i really have to un/reinstall? Does this solve the error massage? Or just clearing the cache solves it too?

Hi cska133, first I would recommend you to try the cache cleaning, then you will see, if the reinstall is needed, but I think it will be.

Sorry but even after reinstall I still get this error messages in the activity log :-
Does Any other user get them too?

I get the same error.

v5.4.1-12436-8aad6f0
Android 4.1.2
Normal google play services installed

Reinstalling got me the updated version. We’ll see if I can do the update next time it’s out of date.
