Virus definitions not updating.

I have a P4 system running Windows 2000 SP4 with Rollup 1 installed 1GB RAM 27GB available disc space that has stopped updating avast’s virus definitions. I get the red box pictured below and if I attempt the update manually I get the “not enough storage space is available to process the command” error. I have uninstalled and reinstalled avast but get the same thing.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Besides avast using different servers for vps updates you might want to add at least 1GB more RAM.
1GB is not very much anymore. By the time you have what you need loaded there probably isn’t much space left.
With all the software I have on my laptop I wouldn’t want any less than 2GB. My laptop came with 3GB and I added
three more gigs.

One way to make more space is to clean out your temp files. Myself and many other forum members use CCleaner.
You can download CCleaner from here.

Further to this I have attempted to do a manual update by downloading vpsupd.exe (two versions) and when executed I get the popup window attached indicating the VPS database is already up to date even though in “about” it shows 130902.

2 things that I notice.

The message “already up to date” looks to me it is from a old version of avast.
What exact version of avast and vps do you have installed at the moment?

What is telling you that you have 27Gb disk space left?
Mostly it is reported wrong due to the way applications calculated the free space.

I agree with Para-Noid that you should use CCleaner as well as Defraggler (also free from Piriform)
I also suggest to get more ram.
1Gb for a P4 is really not enough.
Check the motherboard manual what is supported and get the maximum ram it supports.
It will speed up things noticeably.

Problem solved and avast is working fine again.

I had already run CCleaner and Task Manager showed memory was peaking at 600-700MB as there’s very little running on this machine. The 27GB available disc was as reported by Windows Explorer and I had run a defrag. It was avast 8.0.1497 with vps 20130902.

I uninstalled, ran the uninstall tool and reinstalled one more time but nothing changed.

Eddy’s comment about the “already up to date” message coming from an old version of avast got me thinking so I uninstalled 8, ran the uninstaller tool and installed 7 from an old setup file I had. Everything went fine and I did a program update from within avast and when I was back at 8 all was well.

Thanks for the assistance.
