Problem solved and avast is working fine again.
I had already run CCleaner and Task Manager showed memory was peaking at 600-700MB as there’s very little running on this machine. The 27GB available disc was as reported by Windows Explorer and I had run a defrag. It was avast 8.0.1497 with vps 20130902.
I uninstalled, ran the uninstall tool and reinstalled one more time but nothing changed.
Eddy’s comment about the “already up to date” message coming from an old version of avast got me thinking so I uninstalled 8, ran the uninstaller tool and installed 7 from an old setup file I had. Everything went fine and I did a program update from within avast and when I was back at 8 all was well.
