Virus definitions not updating

I have a VPN running (Hide.Me) but Avast refuses to update my virus definitions with it running. That means I am constantly getting messages that the definitions are out of date.
If I have to keep manually shutting down my VPN to update Avast, there’s not much point in paying for it to get regular automatic updates.

I need a way to get Avast to update my virus definitions with the VPN running. I have tried adding the updater to the exclusion list of the VPN, but the update progress bar just keeps swinging back and forth without actually doing anything. Eventually, it drops the connection.

Any suggestions?

Premium. 21.11.2500 (build 21.10.6772.0)
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
Spybot installed. Has never interfered before.

Will not update virus definitions while Hide.Me is connected to a VPN
I have to manually discinnect Hide.Me to enable definition updates.

Hi, version and build# don’t match, try a repair.

Repair Avast:

  1. Avast GUI → Settings → Troubleshooting
  2. Click on ‘REPAIR APP’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.
