Virus definitions outdated

Avast tells me that my virus definitions are outdated. I clicked on the update button and nothing.

It looks like other customers are having the same problem

What operating system are you running. What version of avast are you using.
can you take a screenshot of the update page.
where does it tell you its outdated. is it after a network or smart scan or is the info below showing in red?
